Thanks for the follow-ups & figuring out the location of the Classic Garage & Body Works Flyingwedge, tovangar2 and HossC.

recap: Mr. Meagher's 'death' car turning into the garage at 6245 Lexington Ave. (near Vine)

Here's a photograph of 'liquor dealer' and soon to be murdered Mr. Meagher and I assume his wife.

http://digital2.library.ucla.edu/vie...198/zz002hbnsv

He looks like a tough cookie. No wonder he was able to wrestle the gun away after he was shot.

(and what was the Mrs. Meagher doing inside with a sailor?)

The Meagher home at 580 N. Irving Blvd. shortly after the murder. [ January 18, 1933 ]

http://digital2.library.ucla.edu/vie...198/zz002hbnqt

I hope that's OIL on the driveway and not blood

The home is still there but the view is blocked by a wall and shrubbery.

gsv

That looks like it might be the original driveway as well-------->

I wonder if the people that live there now...................oh, never mind.

I was waiting for you to prove it, Diamond-X! When you didn't, I gave it a go. The first two stitch together nicely, but you'd need another intermediate image to get all the way around to the beach.

I believe this is new to NLA.

Three young women dance around a flowering palm tree that grew at the astounding rate of one foot per day
in the yard of Mrs. F. P. Coves at 441 West 33rd Street, Los Angeles. [1925]

http://photos.lapl.org/carlweb/jsp/D...wdate=&hidate=

If I'm not mistaken, this block of 33rd street was paved over for the Harbor Freeway in the 1950s.

E_R, just for conversation at your next party, it's my understanding the standard disclosure form for a home sale requires the seller to state if anyone has died in the house. When my dad passed away in 2006, we sold his house and the realtor asked if he died there (no, BTW, in a very un-noirish hospital). The realtor said some people of certain cultures regard buying a home where someone died as bad luck. Not sure if driveways count....

The list (from 1920) is kinda long & in tiny type so I did't post it.
It's at the link above.

Does the Auto Club still contract with garages?
Well the 'under contract' terminology is not really used but yes, there are still 'AAA Approved' auto repair garages, in the same manner as AAA approved lodgings and restaurants. The closest one to the Classic Garage location is Bert's Garage at 1912 N. Cahuenga.

Absolutely. Palms proper don't bloom like that! With that inflorescence, it could even be some (unfamiliar) species of Agave or (better?) Beschorneria that had had all of its leaves sliced off.

Yea, I wasn't so sure that was a palm either, but Los Angeles Public Library described it as a palm so I left it at that.

Also, is it really possible for a plant to grow a foot in one day? That's almost scary.

It's off to Huntington Beach for today's Julius Shulman post. This is "Job 5146: Kurt Meyer, Huntington Beach Civic Center (Huntington Beach, Calif.), 1974".

Here's a closer look from the opposite side.

An end view.

I've omitted a few shots of other angles, but couldn't leave out these fountains.

This is the back of the police department. Those squad cars remind me of countless TV shows and movies I watched in the '70s and '80s .

There are a few arty shots in the set.

This is one of four color images, but the only I'm posting.

I assume that this last photo shows a meeting room.

All from Getty Research Institute

The Civic Center and police department can still be found at 2000 Main Street, Huntington Beach. Apart from the solar panels, the exterior looks the same.

It can happen. Back to Agaves, I've personally had Agave flower stalks literally grow 8 inches in a day, so 12 inches wouldn't surprise me. Grasses and Bamboos (Bamboos are grasses; Corn too, for that matter) can grow that fast. Tropical rain forest plants--trees and lianas--can do that; and I wouldn't put it past some Orchids. Yes, it is frightening!

Surprisingly, we haven't seen this photograph from the USC Digital Archives on NLA.

Russell's Studio Inn at W. Pico Blvd. and Fox Hills Drive. [1936]

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co...id/84874/rec/7

Here's a closer look...

detail

To tell you the truth, I was quite shocked to find it still standing!

gsv / 2017

But it looks a bit worse for wear.

In this view we're looking east on W. Pico Blvd. Russell's can be seen on the left.

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co...id/84874/rec/7

A closer look.

detail

....and in 2014.

gsv

----------------------

Oh, a couple more things.

The bench in front of Russell's has 'Fox Film Corporation' written on it.

detail

Fox Studio is practically next door.

Do you suppose the mansard roofed building in the distance could be a film set? (red arrow below)

detail

These photographs exist because Tommy Hughes, driving a 1932 Ford Roadster, ran over a pedestrian in front of Russell's.

You can see all of photographs (including two of the roadster) here:

Flyingwedge took us to Russell's Studio Inn, but not the full images or the notes:

What's that little tower peeking out over the roof of Russell's in the historic pix?

I wondered about that little tower too. I couldn't figure it out.

There's only a parking lot there in the 'straight-on' shot.

Did anyone notice the Russell's sign on the south side Pico?

Have we seen the Sea Breeze Sandwich Shoppe?

Surf City Writer at https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...56e3317b1f.jpg

The Sea Breeze was located in Huntington Beach in the 1920s
_

So what makes a ham, a Virgina baked ham? (does it have to be from Virginia.....or is it just cooked a special way)
