Intangibles make Las Vegas competitive for NFL franchise, analysts say

“The Raiders situation is unique because they figure on getting Raiders fans who followed the team in Los Angeles that can drive to the game and they might also get fans from Oakland who are willing to travel for games,” said associate professor Jim Cross. “It’s not like you’re putting a team in St. Louis where you’re not going to have people coming in from out of town.”

As a leading resort destination, Las Vegas also has the advantage of being a desirable place for a leisure trip in addition to being the site of a game where out-of-town fans can see their teams play.

While Oakland possesses several attributes that market studies would say are positives, Cross pointed out that the Raiders aren’t the only NFL team in town.

SIMILARITIES TO NASHVILLE

“I think a better analogy to Las Vegas may be someplace like Nashville. Nashville is actually a smaller town than Las Vegas. They’ve got NHL hockey and they’ve got NFL football and I think the current population is around 2 million,” Cross said.

THE 24-HOUR APPEAL

“It’s a 24-hour town, so one-third of our people may be working at any given time. There are a lot of other entertainment opportunities. How is our economy evolving? We’re becoming more diverse, so that’s a good thing.“

After New Year’s, the next big show in Las Vegas is CES

This year will be the biggest CES ever with 2.5 million square feet of exhibit space. Most conventions and trade shows measure their success on how much real estate they can lease rather than by how many people show up. But CES is no slouch for attendance, the number that grabs Las Vegas’ attention, with somewhere between 165,000 and 175,000 people planning to be here Jan. 5-8.

The exhibit space for this year’s CES will be in record territory, thanks to the city’s tourism leaders anticipating growth not only for this show but for others that are expanding. There also are show producers who want to stage their shows in Las Vegas but can’t as they can’t elbow their way onto the convention calendar because of prior agreements with other shows and date commitments.

To MGM Resorts International’s credit, that company saw the trends coming and moved to expand its convention center at Mandalay Bay and convert a theater that once housed the Cirque du Soleil show “Zarkana” at Aria into convention space.

The LVCVA made its move by announcing a plan to acquire the Riviera, knock it down and then provide additional space for outdoor exhibits before developing plans for a new exhibit hall.

The authority is just about to wrap up Phase 1 of the plan, imploding two Riviera towers over the summer and sweeping everything up for outdoor exhibit use.

CES will be the first show to take advantage of the new space.

A newly striped parking lot where the Riviera’s buildings once stood, designated as the Diamond Lot by the LVCVA, will be available for parking.

New downtown Las Vegas theatres aimed at locals, not tourists or children

There’s a new theater downtown, ending the area’s six-year streak without the silver screen following the closure of Galaxy 14 Neonopolis on Fremont Street.

Eclipse Theaters, at 814 S. Third St., opened Nov. 30. While Galaxy 14 Neonopolis catered to tourists with a few local events mixed in, Eclipse Theaters is separated from the resort areas, on the edge of the Arts District, and the staff hopes to be part of the downtown scene’s burgeoning growth.

California’s energy needs could boost Nevada

As part of a final push for clean energy in the remaining weeks of the Obama administration, the Department of the Interior approved a 728-mile power line Dec. 13 that will move wind energy from Wyoming to Southern Nevada. That wind power, which the federal agency says is enough to supply 1.8 million homes, could then be sold to Western states, especially California.

California is a key market for many clean-energy projects — even beyond its borders — because of its high renewables portfolio standard. Last year, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law requiring power providers to acquire 50 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2030.

“California needs a lot of renewable energy and cost-effective renewable energy,” said Kara Choquette, a spokesperson for the wind-energy transmission project, known as TransWest Express. She explained that delivery of thousands of megawatts from a wind farm in Southern Wyoming to existing energy infrastructure in Nevada will optimally position sales of electricity to a variety of Western customers, similar to the Hoover Dam. Even if TransWest Express does not deliver its power to Nevada households, the state could benefit from an economic standpoint. The $3 billion project, crossing 140 miles of Nevada land in Lincoln and Clark counties, is projected to bring 250 construction jobs and generate $24 million in tax revenue.

Sneak peek at sculptures, park envisioned as Project Neon’s snazzy centerpiece

Final designs are underway for two sculptures that a team of local artists and the Nevada Department of Transportation are hailing as part of a new landmark that will welcome motorists into downtown Las Vegas by 2019.

“We really enjoy the desert landscape and we also obviously like the signs and lights that make Vegas iconic, so we tried to embrace those elements in our artwork,” said Zak Ostrowski, one of three artists from Punch Architecture who designed the $2 million sculptures that will be placed at Charleston Boulevard and Grand Central Parkway.

One known as Hot Dip — a series of steel posts in varying heights and colors — is a 250-foot-long undulating structure that will reach a height of 35 feet in the desert-scaped area at the northwest side of the intersection. Across the street, a perforated metal mass of purple swirls known as Found Font, about 60 feet long and 25 feet tall, will appear to be emerging from the ground.

Hyperloop One plans full test at North Las Vegas site

Hyperloop One announced Tuesday that it will run a full test within the next three months at Apex in North Las Vegas.

“Bear in mind, the Wright brothers’ plane went for 120 feet (the first time it flew under its own power),” said Nick Earle, the company’s senior vice president of global field operations.

The test within the next three months will cover 500 linear meters, Earle said.

Faraday Future unveils speedy electric car at CES, plans to resume construction in NLV

The spot was selected by North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee, who attended the event. Faraday broke ground on its $1.3 billion car factory in North Las Vegas’ Apex Industrial Park in April, and while it stopped construction to focus on building the FF 91, Sampson said Tuesday that he expects to construction to resume soon.

“Our refocusing is to ensure we bring a cutting-edge vehicle to a very dated system and show what we’re capable of,” Wheeler told the Associated Press. “We want to fully fulfill our promise to the state of Nevada” for the 3 million-square-foot facility.”

Faraday spokesman Richard Otto said with the revealing of the FF 91 complete, Faraday will resume construction “in early 2017.”

The 3.4 million-square-foot factory, set on 900 acres, was expected to create 4,500 full-time jobs in Clark County. Faraday was promised $335 million in combined tax and other incentives from Nevada.

Hyperloop One has long-term plans for Apex beyond first test in March

The technological dream of hyperloop transport does not belong solely to Hyperloop One, but the company’s investment in testing at Apex Industrial Park north of the valley makes it the speed merchant of interest in Southern Nevada.

That investment apparently will persist long after what the company hopes is a successful first test of its technology at the end of March.

Nick Earle, Hyperloop One’s senior vice president of global field operations, said Tuesday at a kickoff event for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that the company plans to locate its research and development facility at Apex permanently. Hyperloop One aims to transport freight in its tubes by 2020, with plans to move people at speeds faster than a jumbo jet in 2021.

Tourism officials report record 42.9M Las Vegas visitors in 2016

Las Vegas drew a record number of visitors last year, 42.9 million people, even more than tourism officials had predicted.

The numbers were part of a preliminary tally of 2016 visitor statistics compiled by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) and released Tuesday.

Kevin Bagger, director of research for the LVCVA, said his department had forecast that 42.5 million people would visit in 2016, 4 million fewer than the final count. This is the third consecutive year a new visitation record was set. Last year’s number was 1.5 percent higher than 2015’s.

Raiders owner Mark Davis set to meet with NFL’s relocation, stadium committees

Mark Davis, owner of the NFL’s iconic silver-and-black Oakland Raiders, will have a golden opportunity Wednesday in New York to demonstrate to fellow owners that it’s in the best interests of pro football’s most exclusive club to permit him to move his team to Las Vegas.

Davis will appear before the stadium and finance committees in day-long meetings that involve other related league matters. More than half of the NFL’s ownership group will be in New York.

Several of the NFL’s most powerful owners, or their representatives, will listen to Davis update his efforts to move the Raiders out of Oakland for a second time in the last 38 years. Among those owners is Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots who, along with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, has said Las Vegas is a favorable relocation destination.

Steelers owner: Raiders might move to Las Vegas without Adelson investment

The Oakland Raiders might decline Sheldon Adelson’s stadium investment in pursuing relocation to Las Vegas, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II said Wednesday.

Adelson, chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp., has negotiated for months with Mark Davis, the Raiders’ majority owner and general managing partner, on a stadium lease agreement. They have yet to reach accord. But that hasn’t changed the Raiders’ desire to leave Oakland for Las Vegas.

“I think the Raiders are looking at this potentially going without Mr. Adelson,’’ Rooney, chairman of the league’s stadium committee and one of the NFL’s most influential owners, told reporters in New York after league meetings on relocation and stadium issues.

Raiders: Las Vegas stadium financing secure, with or without Adelson investment

Oakland Raiders executives have told the NFL that Goldman Sachs is committed to financing the team’s proposed domed stadium in Las Vegas with or without an investment from casino executive Sheldon Adelson, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority board learned Thursday.

Jeremy Aguero of Applied Analysis, the company serving as staff to the authority, on Thursday provided an update on the Raiders’ relocation efforts after consulting with team officials earlier in the day.

Aguero’s statement to the authority board provided a clearer picture of what the NFL’s stadium and finance committees were told by the Raiders at a Wednesday meeting in New York.

Raiders to file relocation papers to move from Oakland to Vegas

The Raiders will file relocation papers to move from Oakland to Las Vegas, according to sources familiar with their thinking. After a year of planning, debate, and bold action, after many years of a sub-par stadium option in Oakland, the Raiders have made a firm decision on their future.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said "if the (Raiders) decide that they can't make it work in Oakland and they decide that they want to file for relocation, then their window is from when they get eliminated from the playoffs to Feb. 15." They will file before that window closes.

The filing would include a statement explaining the Raiders' decision, then potentially words from Goodell. There would be committee meetings to analyze the move from all sides, then a vote of all the owners. Between the analysis, vetting, and discussion, it's likely it would take about 4-6 weeks.

That would set up a vote of the owners to send the Raiders to Vegas during the late-March league meetings in Arizona -- with 24 votes needing to pass. The other option would be to call a special league meeting, which doesn't appear likely.

Las Vegas’ master-planned communities make steady comeback

Around the Las Vegas Valley, master-planned communities offer housing, parks, retail, schools and other components. And after the economy crashed last decade, these sprawling projects were derailed with practically everything else in the real estate industry.

Among them: Cadence stalled, Summerlin’s developer went bankrupt, Inspirada went bankrupt, Park Highlands went bankrupt twice, and the site of what’s now called Skye Canyon was seized through foreclosure before a single house was built.

Master-planned communities aren’t all roaring with growth today. But with the homebuilding sector revived from its near-death years ago, such projects are back in business.

Proposed budget signals $115M in new investment for Nevada higher education

evada Gov. Brian Sandoval, in his Tuesday night State of the State address, referred to the $115 million in new investment for the Nevada System of Higher Education as “strategic.”

Sandoval’s proposed budget would give UNLV the bulk of the money — $37.4 million — directed toward increasing student enrollment as the state prepares for a growing population and economy. The University of Nevada, Reno would receive $21.3 million for this purpose, and $21.4 million would be directed toward the state’s four community colleges for career and technical education.

In addition, Sandoval’s proposed budget calls for funding UNLV’s School of Medicine beyond its start-up costs, which it received in the 2015 legislative session. The proposal also would provide funding for capacity building projects at all teaching institutions and the Desert Research Institute, as well as, capital improvement projects, including the completion of UNLV’s hotel college, a new engineering building at UNR and deferred maintenance projects.
