LEXINGTON | City Center | HEIGHT | 12 FLOORS

New tower proposal for Lexington, KY.

http://www.kentucky.com/454/story/335504.html

Divided over downtown
High-rise hotel is a major part of the project

With an announcement of a high-rise downtown hotel development expected as early as this week, two groups are keeping a close eye on a strip of historic buildings on the block where the building will rise.

Supporters of the mixed-use development -- shown as a 40-story tower in preliminary plans -- say it will bring new life to the heart of downtown, and that it isn't economically feasible to keep the old buildings on the block.

THE RENDERING!

http://www.kentucky.com/254/story/336726.html

the article says the building would be roughly as tall as the lexington financial center, but it's listed as 30 stories. this new tower is listed as 40 stories. so i'm not sure what's going on with that.

The original post says it will be the second tallest building in the state. That would put it just over 500 feet.

Aegon is around 550 feet while National City is just over 500 feet. National City is 40 floors so that's probably a fairly accurate indicator as to how tall this would be. Although residential floors tend to be slightly shorter so that could alter the height somewhat depending on how large the crown is.

From what I've seen thusfar it doesn't look taller than Aegon. With nothing around it, it's difficult to tell from the rendering what the accurate height will be.

Where in the world did you get that this building was gonna be anywhere near the second tallest building in Ky, and tallest not counting MP??? This thing is gonna be 406 ft, which is shorter than Humana, at 417 ft, PNC Plaza, at 420 ft, National City Tower, at 512 ft, & Aegon Center, at 549 ft. It won't even be in the top 5 for the state, so before making a statement like it's gonna be the tallest in the state, make sure it's true. NCT is also 40 stories, if that's what you based your belief of it being tallest on, the number of floors are the same for the two, but one is a residential tower and one is a business tower and there are generally a lot of difference in the floor height between the two. I'm not being harsh, but I do think it was premature to shout tallest before you even have facts. It is a very nice building though and I'm glad Lexington may be getting a new tower!

Wow, that only took twenty years. I've been bitchin about our weak downtown ever since I moved here in 88'. It's nice to finally see something in the works. That's a pretty aggressive timetable for a block that's already occupied with other buildings. 2 1/2 years is pushing it for a site that has to be demolished and excavated before a 40 story tower goes up. Hope we can get this done.

It only took five years of posting on this site before I could finally post something about my own city.

Whoa. That's pretty cool. It kind of reminds me of some of the highrises in Metropolis and other architecture from that era.

It would have to be taller than 549 feet since Aegon Center in Louisville is that height. This is of course if they're including the Museum Tower there.

By the way, you can vote in an online poll at the link below on whether you think it will be a good addition to Lexington's skyline or not.

I doubt they are including Museum Plaza in that statement. If it is going to be roughly as tall as the "Big Blue Building," then I think 500ft would probably be closer to that mark than 550ft. I would love for it to be as tall as possible, but I think they might be downplaying the height right now because of local affection for the BBB.

Lexingtons newspaper says the height is only 406 feet and explains this height because less room is needed between hotel and residential floors

^^^Exactly. 13 or so ft per floor is fairly standard for office construction whereas most residential is around 10 ft per floor. The reason is that office has higher ceilings and, usually, dropped ceilings for conduit and ductwork in the ceilings.
