hectic construction schedule to the block immediately south of City Creek.
The excitement continues to build throughout Downtown as dozens of
large and small projects progress through their proposals and
beginning construction phases. Newly announced is this beautiful
boutique hotel tower, which is now accelerating through the approval

Thanks Tony. The easy part of updating this thread wouldn't be possible without the much more time consuming reporting by Isaac Riddle, and the great photographers like yourself.
Speaking of which, Thanks for these great updates below. I noticed these updates this morning on the local Salt Lake City Thread. This S-line corridor is really shaping up to be an
outstanding contribution to the city. I hadn't expected it to be so far along with residential developments at this point.

Sugar House District - Rehab and Reuse - The Costume Building

Isaac Riddle Reports: Full Article @ http://www.buildingsaltlake.com/deve...ng-apartments/

Developers, Salt Lake Costume Properties, Inc., wants to convert the former Salt Lake City Costume building on the southeast corner of the 1100 East and 1700 South into a 19-unit residential building...The building’s exterior shell will be preserved, the developers are requesting the height increase to be able to adjust roof and ceiling heights. The developers plan to remove the hard stucco that covers the top two floors and will instead utilize a brick veneer for the all three levels. The current building has very few windows. The proposed conversion will add windows and glass doors on all three floors to increase transparency. The top two floors will include exterior balconies. The developers plan to retain the iconic knight sign and incorporate it into the building’s renovation. The building currently has three cell towers on the roof. The developers plan to replace the three cell towers with two water towers that would serve as cell equipment. Additionally, the RB zone only allows for 4 inch-wide decorative balconies, under the planned development request the developers want to build 12-inch balconies. The proposed 19 units will be predominantly one bedroom apartments. The ground floor will have four units, three of which will be live/work units and one loft unit. The ground floor units will be walk-up units and will front 1100 East. The second and third floors will have eight and seven units respectively. The two, two-bedroom units will occupy the third floor.

Interesting feature article in 'Politico' earlier this year. In case you missed it, here's the link: http://www.politico.com/magazine/sto...lanning-214652

Excerpts - Imagine getting 90 municipalities in 10 counties in one of the nation’s fastest growing regions to get on board for a 20-year land use planning effort intended to conserve water use, promote clean air and avoid the destruction of open spaces by slashing housing lot sizes, encouraging higher-density development and imposing new taxes to build a light rail network and commuter rail system from scratch. Imagine that it worked so well the effort expanded statewide.

You might assume it must have started in a liberal bastion like Portland, Oregon or Burlington, Vermont, where people are proud to be tree huggers and planning isn’t a dirty word. But the most ambitious and successful long-term land-use planning effort in American history is happening in ultra-conservative Utah, a state with powerful ranching, mining and energy interests and a reflexive distrust of top-down government solutions. And it was led not by state officials, but by a bipartisan alliance of business, industrial, religious, political and civic leaders, working from plans crowd-sourced from tens of thousands of Utah citizens and executed on a completely voluntary basis by their local governments...

... The results have been impressive: Per capita water use has been cut by more than a quarter and air emissions slashed by nearly half, while 300 square miles of rural and open land have been spared from development. Automobile use has actually dropped slightly in terms of vehicle miles travelled, even as the region’s population has increased by a third, thanks to what is one of the largest transit rail systems per capita in the country. Taxpayers have saved billions in avoided infrastructure spending and maintenance and Envision Utah has been feted by city planners across the country as a model for how to do things right. Envision staff have traveled across the country, providing advice to groups in Detroit and Omaha, North Carolina’s Piedmont Triangle and North Dakota’s Oil Sands, Yellowstone and Eastern Oregon...

The TRAX light rail has a daily ridership of 67,300, providing service to much of Salt Lake City and many of its suburbs. | Mark Peterson/Redux Pictures for Politico Magazine

Construction begins on first of three buildings to replace U. Med School

The Salt Lake Tribune - Alex Stuckey
http://archive.sltrib.com/article.ph...76&itype=CMSID

...The University of Utah broke ground Friday on a new, state-of-the-art complex for outpatient care — just the beginning of a $424 million project to replace the old School of Medicine Building...Construction on a 170,000 square-foot rehabilitation hospital, also currently housed in the medical school building, will begin in about six months and is estimated to cost $95 million. Funding for this building will come from operating revenue bonds and private donations.

The rehab hospital also will be completed in summer 2019. Once patients are moved from the medical school building to the two new buildings, the medical school will be demolished. This is expected to cost $12 million and take six months, officials said.

At that point, construction will begin on the third and final building. The 350,000 square-foot Medical Education and Discovery building will go up where the current medical school is located. It will house the medical school, the Global Health Institute and "collaborative spaces for clinicians, researchers and students," according to the U.'s website.

Downtown Adj. - Ballpark District - Richard Flats Begins Construction

Isaac Riddle Reports - Full Article @ http://www.buildingsaltlake.com/cons...ject-ballpark/

A missing middle development is now underway in a growing section of the Ballpark neighborhood. Construction has started on the Richards Flats, a 32-unit condominium project at the northeast corner of the intersection of Richards Street and 1700 South...

...The project will consist of three buildings, the largest of which will have 16 for-sale units and will front 1700 South. Two buildings consisting of eight for-sale units each and will be directly north of the larger building.

The condos will replace a large vacant lot, and three abandoned single-family structures that were demolished several months ago. Prominent power lines on the property will be buried to accommodate the three buildings.

All three buildings will be four stories with upper and lower two-story condo units. The development will have 33 parking spaces that will be accessed from 1700 and will slope down below grade under the units...

UPS To Build Crown Jewel Distribution Center In Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY — Construction has begun on a new UPS distribution facility that the company says will provide Utah with an estimated 1,500 additional jobs.

Set to be the crown jewel in the UPS system, the new facility is being built at 380 S. 6400 West. It will measure 840,000 square feet and will be capable of processing 69,000 packages an hour, according to a written statement from the company.

Carolee Streeper, the UPS human resources manager in Salt Lake City, said the building will be “fully automated and will have very high conveyors and tilt trays.” Despite the extensive automation, “we’re going to be adding about 1,500 jobs,” she said.

There’s also a ripple effect with an announcement like this. As Utah looks to attract other companies to locate here, the new UPS center can help seal those deals...

Downtown Adj. - Update, Salt Lake City Int. Airport

Isaac Riddle Reports - Full Article @ http://www.buildingsaltlake.com/airp...halfway-point/

Isaac Riddle Reports - Construction of the first phase of the new Salt Lake City International Airport has passed the halfway point. The first phase consists of a new consolidated terminal, south concourse, parking garage, gateway welcome center and the recently completed rental car facility...The new airport will have over 70 gates and will be built to LEED Gold standards, making it one of the most energy efficient airports in the country. The new main terminal will be three levels and will be designed to reflect Utah’s geography, with interior and exterior materials intended to resemble the variable terrains that create a sense of place unique to Utah. Included in the main terminal will be an artificial canyon, resembling the canyons of Southern Utah...Besides rising construction costs, the ongoing construction project will require additional workers. According to airport officials, they have employed 700 construction workers so far but will eventually need up to 2,000 workers. Employing that many new workers could prove challenging as the industry is already underemployed...
