DUDE!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! My mind is already going crazy with ideas for what the new airport could be like. Not to mention what could be done if McCarran were to actually be removed. Forget all those FAA permits blocking the construction of super-talls in Vegas! (although the "Crown" tower can go back to phallus land)

I also love the fact that Ivanpah might get connected to Vegas through high speed rail. That is an absolute must.

If McCarran gets replaced totally (I know Ivanpah is just to relieve it, but I would like to see it replaced) then I would like to see something awesome in its place.

Ivanpah is years away, if ever. It has never been seriously suggested to totally close McCarran. It would be asinine to waste the billions of tax dollars that have been spent by not continuing to use it. There is no compelling reason to close it. It is close to the Strip and gives the casinoes added time to drain the gamblers wallets. That extra commute time, even on a high speed train would not be good for corporate revenue. There are ecological costs to the Ivanpah airport which McCarran doesnt have. Vegas like San Diego and a host of other cities have close in airports which tourists and most residents love, they just have shorter buildings. An excellent trade off to most people.

They'd keep McCarren... However, Las Vegas will be added to the list of cities with 2 or more airports along with NYC, Chicago, Houston, Miami, and LA.

With the highrise development in Las Vegas moving northward, the zoning gradually becomes more lax. For example, take the difference in height of the area zoned for Project City Center and the area zoned for the Stratosphere or where Crown Las Vegas was supposed to be.

McCarran is going to reach its absolute capacity in a few years. They (the city) would have to start buying land if they wanted to expand it further. So unless Las Vegas starts to shrink, which isn't happening anytime soon, Ivanpah is inevitable. If not Ivanpah then some other location unless the North Las Vegas airport is willing to see dramatic expansion. So unless you have a viable alternative, I think Ivanpah is going to go ahead as soon as the ecological survey is done.

They have already started the E Gates at McCarren. It will be almost double the size of the D Gates, and have it's own access from Russell Rd...

McCarren is not going anywhere anytime soon...

"McCarren is not going anywhere anytime soon..."

...nor should it.
1) it's convenient
2) it'a part of the excitement for any gambling tourist--to fly in to LV, with The Strip right outside your window!
3) building hight? pfttt. You ever wonder why San Jose--the 9th or 10th largest city in the US--has a bunch of just under 300' "skyscrapers"? LV's downtown is even farther from the airport than The Strip(which has 700'+, now), so someday downtown will be able to go even higher.

The airport itself is one of the most pleasant, user friendly of the airports I've been to. My only complaint...the only way to get there is by Taxi or Casino Van or car. I can't remember if the buses go there, but unless buses come by every 5 or 10 minutes--they're lame. My suggestion is to extend the existing monorail right into the airport--ASAP!

Incidently, mdiederi, (who posts here regularly), has a thread over at skyscrapercity, with lots of info on the proposed Ivanpah Airport.

the 108 serves the airport and stops right outside terminal 1, it goes up paradise and past the hilton and stops at the back of sahara hotel and then on to downtown, its not really convenient for most resorts unless you change

If you look at an FAA chart for vegas the tallest buildings are (2720) feet MSL from mandalay to wynn.

Huh. I just read that the desert tortoises like to sit there and watch planes fly by because they think airplanes are fire breathing eagles of steel, death and plague. So they may need to relocate the tortoises.

I vote for employing tortoises as bellhops. Slow, slow bellhops.

The people over at skyscrapercity also seem to like the idea of getting rid of McCarran and building something on the real estate. I think that is going to eventually happen, but it might be 30 years.

Looks like a Frank Stella painting above the front desk.

Update on The Harmon

I've been getting a lot of calls from clients lately asking for updates on The Harmon and the rebar problem.

Today (Nov. 30, 2008) I called and talked to one of my contacts at MGM Mirage and they told me the basics below.

First of all, there has been no official announcement from construction company on the setback or repair work yet.

The problem was supposed to delay the project's completion by 45 days but seems like longer.

An inspector had noticed that the construction was not matching up with the architectural and engineering drawings and demanded it fixed. Could be an issue on every floor but I couldn't confirm.

The project MAY have gone up to 24th floor last week but couldn't confirm.

Does anyone else have any news?

I second that, I'd figure an issue as serious as this would mean total demolition of the building since it's part of its structure, then again I'm probably way off.

An article from Las Vegas Sun newspaper says that the building is structurally sound and at the time, in September, the Harmon would be behind two weeks. Maybe things turned out worst than they thought?

Seems kind of strange, when I vision correcting re-enforcing steel rebar, I imagine having to chip away at the concrete that supports the building in order to access the rebar. Anyway, that's just what I think of.
