Excavation continues meanwhile in the eastern "tub" for the terminal and shopping mall...

What's that? Could that be the first foundation slab for the hub?

No, it's a crawler path for the Manitowoc 18000. They'll use it to construct the hub.

That's not going to happen. If anything, the only open space would be a plaza above the Tower 2 foundations and lower levels.

Bugger. I was getting all excited just then.
Still nice to see some sort of visual progress though. I know they ran into a few geological inconveniences, but it seemed like they were going to be digging forever!

when are they planning to cover the big open section by the south pool, that stretches over to 1WTC? i feel like if that was to be covered soon, it would dramatically improve the feeling of completion.

They are working on it at the moment, but the work is slow as construstion can only be done at night when the PATH is closed.

I"m not sure what section you're talking about. There's no major opening near the Freedom Tower, unless you are referring to the PATH station itself.

Yeah, the station itself is going to stay where it is, they are going to reconfigure the space above it. I wouldn't expect it to be covered in the near term.

Here's a vetter view of what they're doing.

I went down there yesterday and managed to get some pictures. It looks like they're building the path hall inside-out.

Two bonus pictures of the bases of the tower cranes:

Yeah, the station itself won't be moved. There were plans at one time to add another platform. Most of what people think of as the transit hall will be on the opposite side of Greenwich Street (or what will be), in the tub where they are now excavating. That will actually be the mall, and main entrance down into the station. But the station itself will stay right where it is.

That’s going to be quite an extensive concourse; and doubly as impressive given that it’ll stretch all the way to the Fulton Street Transit Center. Is that a model of what’ll be the final product?
