I noticed the other day that there at least seem to be sidewalks along most of the street. This is relatively new is it not? They seem very narrow for such a busy area.

This is just my opinion of Rainey St, but I think the claustrophobic/missing/makeshift sidewalk situation and the co-mingling of pedestrians/cars/bikes is part of what makes the neighborhood unique. Yes, it feels chaotic at times. Yes, it is probably not the safest mix of traffic (especially when alcohol is added to it). And yes, it's not the prettiest streetscape. It's sort of the anti-"Great Streets" street, and that's what makes it special in that respect... At least, for now.

Inevitably, though, with the continued redevelopment of the area, this character is going to change. The city WILL eventually get around to fixing up/adding/widening sidewalks and the area WILL become more "pleasant" (and less interesting IMO) because of it. I'll just appreciate the imperfections while they last.

I haven't been over there in weeks, but the little bit of sidewalk I had last seen was only in front of the Container Bar. I'm guessing that was put in as part of the development of that lot and had nothing to do with the upcoming city work. I have not seen any news on the city plans this since this last DAB post from more than a year ago:

Here's a permit request that was filed today that refers to a hotel at the Millennium Rainey address of 91 Rainey St.

Apparently continuing the trend of developers cheaping out and leaving floor plates exposed.

Maybe this was a simple error? Maybe it was supposed to be 91 Red River instead?

The address may be wrong, but it's not 91 Red River. Below is a link to the tree permit for 91 Red River, and the legal description of the lot is completely different than Millennium Rainey.

91 Red River (see legal description): https://www.austintexas.gov/devrevie...erRSN=11192365

"91 Rainey Street" aka Millennium Rainey (see legal description): https://www.austintexas.gov/devrevie...erRSN=11198377

(I posted this on the other thread as well).

I noticed at least one crane section on site when I drove by the site earlier today. That crane base has been up forever (in restless skyscraper nerd time) it seems. Hopefully the first crane will be going up soon.

Damn at this rate I might have to change from making fun of the snail's pace of construction on the library to Millennium Rainey

I'm really amazed at how long it has taken to make so little progress. It's a good thing they only have eight floors to build. At the current rate it will take about six years to finish this thing.

There's actually two crane bases on site, but the project continues to move at a snails pace.

Are you sure that you didn't photoshop that? Is that really the Millennium site? I can't believe the cranes are going up already.

Lol. It is, I had to tilt my tablet up to get the crane shot instead of shooting forward to get the base of it.

As soon as they start coming down from projects nearing completion more start rising to the occasion.

I often wonder what projects each of the cranes have worked on. I'm guessing each crane piece remains grouped together with the rest of the pieces, even after it's been dismantled.
