Not my side of town. It was up in Hazel Dell, but as a conspiracy theory...

It might have been the Clark PUD co-gen plant South of Vancouver Lake that helped create it. The plant sends up a steam plume a couple of miles in the air. It might have been just enough warm, wet air to mix with the thunderstorm above, to help create a tornado. It touched down first on the NE shore of Vancouver Lake.

a pic from a walk I took this afternoon (3/28/08). It was kind of a snow/hail/rain mix...

It snowed for quite a while while I was at work this morning in LO, too.

I was up in Seattle on Friday, dumped snow all morning until around 2pm. Crazy stuff... when I got back I heard it snowed in a couple places in Portland. True?

So this isn't Portland...but, I got into Redmond yesterday and it was sunny and 45. This morning I opened my curtains in my hotel room and there is several inches of snow on the ground and it's still coming down pretty heavy. Wasn't expecting this!

what a BEAUTIFUL day!

Spring comes to Portland for a limited time only
High temperatures could hit 75 today before you-know-what returns Monday
Saturday, April 12, 2008

STUART TOMLINSON
The Oregonian

After a cool start to spring, temperatures will soar today in much of Oregon and southwest Washington.

Enjoy the weather while it lasts, because by Monday it looks like April showers will return to laying the foundation for May flowers.

A dome of high pressure extending from Bellingham, Wash., to Salt Lake City is forecast to push highs today in Portland close to 75 degrees, and to 65 degrees Sunday -- well above the average high of 60.

"The warm temperatures will be short-lived as the high pressure moves in and the next front lines up," said Jonathan Wolfe, a forecaster for the National Weather Service in Portland. "The front is kind of wimpy, but a sharp cold front will slide down the coast by Sunday night for showers on Monday."

Since fall, the Pacific Northwest has been under the influence of a powerful La Nina, the periodic cooling of the tropical Pacific Ocean surface that creates colder and wetter winters for the Northwest, which often extend into spring.

Since March 1, Portland's high temperature has been normal or above normal on just 11 of 42 days, including Friday, when the high was 69.

It's been wet, too. March and April had only three days apiece without precipitation, some of which fell as snow.

Earlier this week, forecasters said that even though the current La Nina has weakened it is expected to continue at least into the middle of summer, perhaps to the end of July.

"The February numbers showed that the water temperatures in the central Pacific were the coldest since 1950, which is the coldest on record," said George Taylor of the Oregon Climate Service. "It's clearly an extreme La Nina. But the forecast models are pretty bad at recognizing transitions ."

Taylor said Oregon summers after strong La Ninas are typically drier and warmer than average.

"I'd say there's a 70 percent chance of that happening this summer," he said.

Wintry weekend on tap, on the heels of last week's summer tease
Posted by The Associated Press April 17, 2008 09:27AM
Categories: Breaking News, Weather

The National Weather Service says northwest Oregon and southwest Washington will likely see snow this weekend after having 80-degree weather last weekend.

Forecasters say the unseasonably cold weather means snow levels down to 1,000 feet or even 500 feet, with a mix of rain and snow on the valley floors.

Morning temperatures Sunday and Monday are expected to drop to 25 to 30 degrees
, putting vulnerable spring plants at risk.

Cities affected include Astoria, Cannon Beach, Tillamook, Lincoln City, Newport, Florence, Grande Ronde, Swisshome, Hillsboro, Portland, Salem, Eugene, Vancouver and Mount St. Helens.

Jeeze, I thought it was Spring. I haven't lived here long, but I don't think this is typical for Portland in late April, right?

Nope!

Lived here all my days (48yrs) and this is different.

Once in the late 70's I was at Timberline in mid-April and we had a major snow storm come through. But that was at 6'000 ft above sea level and the cold air stayed aloft (not on the valley floor).

I'm in Mexico right now, sweating my ass off. All I hear about from family up there is the freak April snow, I don't ever recall having snow past early march.

I have seen some CRAZY weather but I can't ever think of a time that it went from the low 60s to 95 in three days, and back to the low 60s and stormy rains in just two more days.

What a weird week, weather wise!

not to mention I'd like to see some of that snow in the cascades melted before next winter so I can see the damn high country for once (moved here last October when it was too late). And I'm not even just talking about Mt. Hood but frickin' Larch Mountain.

Larch Mountain is East of Troutdale at 4'000 Feet

It is part of the fault line of the Cascade Range 10 miles to the West of the volcanic peaks of the Cascade Range.

Look at Mt. Hood from Portland and the tallest hill to the left and in front with the cliff (notch on the North side) at the peak. That is Larch Mountain and the Snow Gates are still closed this late in the Spring.
