Kansas City #7 - The Stadiums

So far we've had ...

Kansas City #1 - Downtown
Kansas City #2 - Quality Hill
Kansas City #3 - Beacon Hill
Kansas City #4 - The Plaza
Kansas City #5 - River Market
Kansas City #6 - Crossroads

Now we do pictures of the stadiums.

Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium are right next to each other at the SE corner of I-70 and I-435 in the Truman Sports Complex. They were both built at the same time in 1968-72 and both were renovated at the same time in 2007-10. It's a good way to compare and contrast a baseball stadium with a football stadium because, to put it bluntly, baseball stadiums seem to have more ambiance than your typical football stadium. Due to the irregular dimensions of a baseball diamond, baseball stadiums seem to have more nooks and crannies in which to put interesting public spaces, particularly in and around the outfield. A football stadium is a much more uniform entity on all sides so you get fewer opportunities to do interesting things with the design. At least, this is certainly the case with these two stadiums.

I've got various photos from various Royals games both this year and last. However, I'll start with my one and only set of Arrowhead pics. I'd never been to an NFL game before, but on Oct 23rd I went to their game against the Saints (they won). The thing that struck me most was how much smaller a football field is compared to a baseball field. It was also much louder! And even though some of the Royals games were nearly sold out, it took me MUCH longer to get in and out of the Chiefs game than it did even the busiest of the Royals games.

Anyway, here's Arrowhead ...

And that's it!

A lot of redundant pictures I suppose, but as I said, football stadiums (at least, this football stadium) tend to be a pretty uniform structure on all sides and you don't get much variation, so there wasn't a lot of variety on which to focus pictures.

oh god, chiefs fans.

i like the individual kauffman stadium structure where the royals play, it's the last stadium of a generation...all i'll say about TSC (Truman Sports Complex).

historical context...TSC is located near the site of an 1881 jessie james train robbery, as dramatised in the understated 2007 film with Brad Pitt/Casey Affleck The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

I remember going on a tour of both stadiums in the summer of 1981 while on a road trip back to western Illinois to see my mom's side of the family. Being from Broncos land the Chiefs were kind of considered a "friendly" rival since most broncos fans hated the Raiders and Chargers and plus KC was the next NFL city over from Denver-about 530 miles. One of my high school buds played for the Chiefs in the mid 80s-early 90s then retiring after hurting his lower back. I remember when Joe Montana was there near the end of his career-they where one playoff win away from the Superbowl. In 1997 the Broncos ended up at 12-4 but the Chiefs won the division at 13-3, the Broncos beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead in a thriller and then went on to beat Pittsburgh at Three Rivers then beat the Green Bay Packers in the bowl in late Jan of 1998. It's interesting that the coach of the Chiefs Marty Schottenheimer started quarterback Elvis Gerbac instead of the hot-handed Rich Gannon-Gerbac had been hurt and Rich Gannon was having a hot streak similar to what Andrew Luck is having now with the Colts. Who knows had Gannon started the Chiefs could have beat the Elway and Co Broncos back then...

Oh almost forgot before Denver got the MLB Rockies-the Royals were a team most folks from my parts would go to see a major league baseball game-and btw who can forget the awesome I-70 World Series with the St Louis Cardinals!

Now I'm a Broncos-Chiefs guy living on the edge of Raider land.

OK it's about time I added my pics of Kauffman Stadium.

This first group was taken during my first trip to KC in May 2015 (can't call it "last year" anymore can I). I've got some better pics taken this past summer which I'll post later, but I'll use these lesser pics to fill up the rest of this page of the thread.

Tailgating is really popular. Usually one thinks of tailgating for football games, but due to the expansive parking lot it's popular for Royals games too!

Anyway, those weren't my best shots. I'll have better ones when we get to the next page. Feel free to write some random junk to help it get enough posts to get to a new page.

Why not a soccer team, huh? Ou j'sais pas, jouez au hockey ou au basketball au moins. You know, like the NHL or the glorious NBA.
Cause this here feels like watching grass growing... Soccer is actually faster somehow, though too often low-scoring. But it's really changing fast these days.
Oh well, just do like little girls in your country. Play soccer or go to the gym. And I mean real gym to do pretty things of your body, huh. No useless workout just to show off like some frustrated gay man.

Nice soccer pitch... I knew they had one. They're in the MLS yet, aren't they?

On a essayé les toilettes partout ici. On a tout essayé en la matière, même pour les chiens ! Mais ça marche pas. Ces abrutis de chiens sont incorrigibles.

I have really enjoyed your KC tours, thanks for sharing.

KC is a great looking city, I'd love to come down for a Chiefs game some time (have heard the tailgate experience is incredible, maybe even better than Lambeau)

Kansas City does have a soccer team, the Sporting (you're supposed to say, "Sporting Kansas City." It sounds very gentlemanly ). Their stadium is in Kansas City, Kansas. Here to be precise.

I'm not really a soccer fan but sometimes I've wondered if I should go to a game someday. If I do I'll take pics and put them here.

After a bit of a break I'm finally getting around to the rest of my stadium pics.

These next photos were taken at Kauffman Stadium in May...
