Thiruvananthapuram: Piling work for the Rs.245.58-crore international terminal complex being constructed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for Thiruvananthapuram international airport will be completed in September.
Over 200 piles have been completed. The authorities are taking up the construction of four to five piles every day. The piles are being simultaneously tested to check if they can withstand the load.
The Rs.165-crore first phase of the terminal complex includes a Rs.115-crore terminal building, apron and a car park in front of the building which can accommodate 575 cars. In addition, parking facility will be provided for the vehicles bringing VVIPs and buses.
“The work is proceeding as per schedule. Over 250 labourers are working on the site round the clock. The terminal will be completed by September 2008 and the commissioning is scheduled for December 2008,” airport director K. Natarajan, who has been promoted as General Manager, Vigilance, at the AAI corporate headquarters in New Delhi, told The Hindu.
The Chennai-based Consolidated Construction Consortium has been entrusted with the work of the terminal, which has a floor area of 23.299 sq. metres. The firm has set up a concrete plant near the site to ensure round the clock work. The AAI has demarcated the site from the operational area by erecting barricades to ensure that flight operations and civil works are not affected.
The work on the AC plant and the ancillary buildings will be taken up after the pile-work is completed in September. Fabrication work for the main terminal building and other works will be taken up simultaneously after September.
The three-storeyed building, constructed on Chaka side and facing the Parvathi Puthanar, has been designed using modern concepts. Basically of tubular structure of elliptical geometry, the building will be constructed using modern construction materials and covered with heat-reflecting toughened glass. All facilities similar to in a world-class airport such as escalators, elevators and aerobridges will be provided. The new terminal complex will have 18 check-in counters, 20 immigration counters, 11 customs counters, two security gates, two baggage claim belts, a bus lounge and a Rs.5-crore sewerage system. The escalator, elevator and the aerobridges will be procured for the airport by the AAI.
Four parking bays would be set up in the first phase at a cost of Rs.14.5 crore, AGM, AAI, S. Aboobacker, said. The four bays would be linked to the 3,398 m runway that would be used for the flight operations.
The tender process for constructing the taxiway to connect the existing runway to the parking bay is being finalised by the AAI, General Manager, AAI, Projects, V.K. Malhotra, said.
In the Rs.80-crore second phase, extension of the terminal building by 50 m on both sides and construction of four parking bays will be taken up.
