little over dramatic are we? None of the four proposals are shit. I agree that none of them are stunners, but any of the four would be a welcome addition to downtown. That being said, is there any chance the feds would kick in some money for this project to make it a showpiece to go along with AGA and city hall...?

If RAM is built and looks like shit - all fingers can squarely point to the "then" Mayor Mandel...and poor judgement. That said, he muses there could be "fixes". Sure. Lets see those now before the contract is signed or include a cash allowance of $50M to improve the design.
I think it is more a case of "lets not f*** it up." The Mayor is a person who is very conscious of the design and appearance of new buildings. There are a number of factors at play given the political climate internally within the PC's and considering the Wildrose will do anything it can to get seats (340 million for Museum may not resenate very well with the rurals). There is also the arena and if something comes off the rails (like a design delay) it could spell the end of the museum.
When I heard Mandell's comments on the news, it didn't sound like that was coming directly from him.

I think if it was up to him, and we had time and assurances beyond Stelmach and the provincial election, Mandell would have a different tune. There are things going on behind the scenes regarding support [from the province] for projects in Edmonton, and the politics involved require some carefull strategy. Mandell knows it and I beleive that if this gets pushed passed Stelmachs time, he probably has good reason to beleive that the chances of a museum in Edmonton are much less.

How are these proposals in any way similar to PP or venetian!? These designs are very nice. They are not as risky as the AGA ( which is a rip off of other buildings anyways...) but are not designs i would consider "setting the bar low". Sorry you all live in a dream world where money grows on trees. There are over 2 million tax payers who do not live in edmonton who do not care if this gets built or not. If we push the matter and go for extra money to make the RAM's design match, or exceed the standard set by the AGA, then we risk the whole scheme failing and being stuck with the current RAM... Another option may be a donation campaign like the one for the AGA. This all takes time though, which because of the election it seems like we dont have...

^I would have to agree with those points... but do feel that even with the time they had, most of the 4 fell short given their respective teams.

At no time was there an implication of architectural comparison. But an objective opinion.

A donation drive might be a good idea to elevate the quality of design...Hummm.

Wow I'd pick that to be built even at the post office site over all the submissions.

I like that the museum is going to the post office site, but it would have been pretty amazing seeing this museum as you enter downtown on a brand new bridge.

EDMONTON - The provincial government will announce the winner of the design-build competition for the new Royal Alberta Museum on Wednesday afternoon, provincial communications staff said Tuesday.

The Journal will livestream the decision Wednesday at 3 p.m. on edmontonjournal.com.

Four local contractor-architecture teams bid on the project. The new museum will be located north of City Hall, where the old post office building is now. It will replace the museum that’s currently at 102nd Avenue and 128th Street.
