Current: Bank of America Tower

Prior: Shop Block

BETTER

Current: 2 Broadway

Prior: Produce Exchange Building

WORSE

Current: 510 Madison Ave

Prior: Some beautiful yet forgettable buildings

(510 Madison Ave adds nothing and it is too short for a prime plot)

Even after the 2 Columbus Square renovation I still can't decide if the new facade is better than the old one. The old facade had quite a bit of character but it's hard to deny that it was kind of an ugly looking building. But amongst the skyscrapers that surrounded Columbus Square it seemed right at home.

The new facade is okay but it makes the building much less iconic, I probably would like it more if the building didn't so obviously say "HI" on it. Was this intentional or not? I just don't get it.

Now let's talk about that beautiful pre-war building behind it, 3 Columbus Circle.

After...

I understand why the building had to be recladded but all I can say is WORSE

Here's another New York reclad, however this one is much less depressing.

2 Broadway, completed in 1959, recladded in the early 1990's.

Here is a rare picture of the process.

The facade did wonders for the very visible Lower Manhattan building, it still looks brand new!

^ Not a fan of that reclad. It's like putting on different clothing that just doesn't look right. The other facade reinforced the verticality which plays to the strengths of the building's massing. The horizontal bands on the new facade erodes it and make this thing look like a fat beast.

Had the previous facade been cleaned up with better glass installed it would have looked pretty amazing.

what is Columbus even used for anyway? Why does the majority of the building have no windows?

It's home to the Museum of Arts and Design. They're the ones who changed the facade in 2008 when they moved into the building.
