I have to say, the design seems very inviting to me. I think it'll fit very well in this neighborhood. It's a nice piece to show off to the China/Dubai bandwagoners, anyhow!

That's just too fantastic. They've got to build this thing.

Of course, now that I've said that...it won't get built.

In the world? I cant agree with that. The design itself is impeccable, but its the urban planning of these west side superblocks that I dislike. However, its nice to see a project going for quality and visual distinction over height. The west side, for all its flaws, is probably the best area for architecture in New York right now.

Yeah the guests in that last picture being shown the model are the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark.

Building a Better Future

By RICHARD B. WOODWARD
October 28, 2011

Quote:
At his offices in one of Chelsea's historic factory buildings, the ebullient Danish architect Bjarke Ingels is hovering over an oddly shaped Taskboard model. One of the latest designs to emerge from his upstart firm, the brashly named BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), this vision of a New York apartment complex has a startling profile totally at odds with the grids of crew-cut, square-shouldered towers dotting the Manhattan skyline.

Angling upward to a point, like a child's drawing of an alp, it is not quite a high-rise. (Ingels is fond of neologisms and has dubbed it a "mid-rise.") Nor is it a pyramid. ("Geometrically, it's a hyperbolic paraboloid, but that's not very sexy.")

This improbable object is taking form under the aegis of the buttoned-up but eco-friendly Durst Fetner real-estate family and will occupy a block between 11th and 12th Avenues at the corner of 57th Street, a rough stretch of town more familiar to truckers than pedestrians. There will be 600 rental units and a row of shops on the ground floor. Already one of the city's most anticipated buildings, though it won't be completed until late 2015, it may well turn out to be just as unusual on the inside. Ingels crouches next to the model and points to one of the last elements he and his team have been working on: a giant periscope for the lobby. "We tested it," he assures me. "When you come in, you'll be able to look into the courtyard of the garden and see the leaves on the trees, the seasons, the sun setting over the Hudson."

Amazing, this building's height is only 14 feet shorter than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.

Its too bad that this building has to go through ULURP. Hoping that a bunch of nimby's won't come out complaining about the building. It would be foolish if it were reduced in height like the MoMa Tower.

A Little News on a BIG Project: Dursts Breaking Ground on 57th Street in Spring

By Matt Chaban 12/14

Quote:
It may just be the most awaited project of the year, and by next year, it will begin to become a reality. West 57, the high-design ziggurat created by the cheeky Bjarke Ingels Group for Durst Fetner, is set to break ground as early as March. That is what Bjarke Ingels let slip at the ASAP party Monday night.

During a presentation of his playful projects—the plaza of many countries, the trash-to-power plant that blows smoke rings—atop the Standard, when Mr. Ingels got to the slides on West 57, he declared very excitedly, “Starting in March, this very exciting project will begin to take shape just a few miles from here.”

A Durst spokesman confirmed the timeline for the project, though he said excavation work might not start until early April. That is also when the Dursts expect to begin the public review process for the pointy property. The hope is, once that is completed, so will be the foundations, which are currently being made for an as-of-right building but will also be able to accommodate the new, cutting edge design.

Meanwhile, further up 57th Street, Gary Barnett pulled a similar move, launching his similarly named and equally ambitious One57 before he secured a loan to finish it.

It will be huge, takes up MOST of the block. But it's good to see something great in the far west side.
