Let's all have a collective sigh of relief that that design isn't what they ended up going with....

It's going to stand out for a couple of years because of its height, not its design. It's pretty bland. The only thing giving it any character is the necessity of chopping off one corner because of the CVC. After a few other surpass it in height, it will be forgotten.

I agree that other than the shape the design is pretty ordinary. I guess it's probably on the level of the Seaholm Residences in that way, but I'm still thinking I'll like this one more than a few others.

It reminds me of the never-built Republic Bank tower in San Antonio from the early 80s. It was supposed to be the 30-story tower next to this one. I was a fan at the time (expectations for architecture were lower in the early 80s) and I am still kind of a fan of 5th & West because of the shape alone. I'll give it a 6.

It's also essentially a shorter version of the Texas Commerce Tower in Houston (or whatever it's called now).

That's the best angle.

That looks better than the rendering, to be honest. Maybe the rendering isn't the final one. The corner column seems to be missing in real life.

(edit) - Oh wait, nevermind. That's the other corner. Oh well, it looks better from that angle as the Genral said.

The crane is being raised for the last time this weekend. There are still a couple more crane sections on the podium waiting to be installed.

This one is still a little different from any of the renderings I've seen. The closest ones still show a jog and more precast on the south side.

Nice photo, Kevin. That's one of my favorite views of downtown Austin, even though it only last about two or three seconds.

West downtown is definitely becoming Austin's blue glass section. I prefer the section near Congress where the buildings look different from each other.

The Fairmont looks kind of shitty from that angle.

The Fairmount looks best viewed from the southwest coming down the slope on Lamar or South First, especially in the late afternoon when the light comes from the west. It is especially handsome for some reason on cloudy days when the color of the glass makes a sharp contrast with the sky. It seems to stand out well from certain perspectives and look very undistinguished from others.

That's kind of a weird marketing slogan there.

I really love the way this one is shaping up. I'll reserve judgement until it's complete, but I think it's turning out to be one of the more impressive looking towers we've seen so far.

Its almost clever. That creek btw looks so anti urban, like something you might see up by me, as is, Brushy Creek. Its so overgrown and doesn't seem that ped friendly. On the other hand, its one of those unexpected things that keeps downtown interesting. I hope they keep it as natural as possible.
I like this tower a lot. What bugs me about it is that they stopped at 39 floors. The Independent stopped at 58. What's with these people?! 40 and 60, sounds so much better to me.

Yeah I don't get their marketing slogans...The one on the other side says something like "all the luxury of the hotel, with none of the guests" or something.
