Hartsfield-Jackson sets flight record

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport claimed a new world record for monthly flight operations in July.

According to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) data, Hartsfield-Jackson handled 88,408 flight operations last month, and set a new single-day record with 3,125 flight operations on July 13, making it the busiest day ever at Hartsfield-Jackson.

Hartsfield-Jackson Aviation General Manager Ben DeCosta said the 3.6 percent increase over 2008 in flight operations was due in part to a fifth runway added in 2006, an end-around taxiway built in 2007 and continuing demand for air service to, from and through Hartsfield-Jackson.

Atlanta and Delta strike tentative airport lease deal

Atlanta city officials confirmed Monday they have reached an agreement in principle on a new master lease that would keep the world’s largest airline from moving capacity out of the world’s busiest airport.

The deal, if approved by the air carrier and Atlanta City Council, would ensure Delta Air Lines Inc. keeps its fortress hub intact at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport through at least September 2017. A new lease also is a boost for the massive International Terminal construction project, which has been threatened by the brouhaha between Delta and the city.

It could also open the door for other carriers to gain a toehold in Atlanta.

Is there and information on why Delta requested that the terminal be gutted 400 million?

I am not sure if I missed this, but what happens after arriving internationally to terminal E, it appears that the bags will still have to be rechecked, because
to reach the new international terminal, one has to go to the people
mover system.

I think that the recheck will be avoided after arriving to the new terminal only; since majority of the international arrivals will remain at terminal E,
as it seems to me from the plans, then the recheck will remain an issue
for international travelers. Or am I missing something.

I don't know the logistics of it but I'm pretty sure that is not the case. Ending the cumbersome process for international arrivals was one of the primary goals of the project. I'm assuming that all international arrivals will simply be routed through the international baggage claim area in the new terminal.

Is there a place where you can shower and take a nap at the airport?

always get lost? that's hard to believe.

hartsfield is one of the easiest to navigate and least stressful airports i've been to in the world. it's a simple spine with each concourse laid out in sequence; a, b, c, d, e....etc and very simple and convenient connectivity from one concourse to the next.

i could see getting lost maybe once if you were in a hurry (or if you had to connect for international travel), but always....really?

Hartsfield seems really easy to get around in to me, too. It's just a straight line.

Yep. Honestly the only airport I've been to that's easier to navigate is the new one in Birsmarck, North Dakota.... 2 gates. Hartsfield is the easiest large airport in the states.

Seriously, it's not that bad at all on other carriers. While concourses T, A, B & E are obviously the nicest (Delta country), I've recently flown out and back on Airtran from C, and it was fine. LOT's of new retail, and the renovations are impressive, imo.

Granted, I haven't seen D in person in about 2 years.

Well, there's a column by Jim Wooten in the AJC that says the suburbs are not to blame for obesity.

http://blogs.ajc.com/thinking-right/...thinking_right

I will have to say that the last time we were in the city I saw a lot of overweight people there, too.

What does that have to do with the airport?

SkyTrain is opening soon

Looks like next Tuesday (Dec 8th) is the first day of the SkyTrain and new car rental facility. The new hotel doesn't open until the 18th

Anybody interested in meeting up some time next week to check it out? I could do Tuesday or Wednesday at lunch or right after work (5:30-6 or so). If you're interested, let me know which time works best. We could meet on the SkyTrain platform nearest the airport.
