The NFL is nowhere near done. Aside from Dallas this year and the New York teams next year, new NFL stadiums are being sought or planned for San Francisco, Oakland (?), San Diego, Minnesota, Atlanta, St. Louis and then there is Los Angeles who seems to come up with a stadium "plan" every couple of years.

Speaking of the Rays, if their new stadium ever gets built, it'll be one of the more striking MLB stadiums ever.

I don't know where to put Turner Field in this discussion, since it was built to be an stadium hosting Olympic ceremonies and track-and-field, and was permanently turned into a baseball stadium afterwards. From what I hear, some of the seat angles there are awful - that's a common complaint with multi-use stadiums.

Tampa bay: don't do it. Ruined Montreal.

yeah, that'd be one hell of a sharp looking stadium. what is the status of it? is it now considered a dead proposal?

Turner Field is not a "multi-use" stadium. It was built as a baseball stadium with a temporary elongated outfield seating structure for the Olympics, but the place was designed first and foremost for baseball...

Turner Field is nice enough, I just don't think it stands out in anyway among all the other "retro" parks of the era.

Yeah, but I can't imagine that Tampa will mismanage their stadium the way Montreal mismanaged "The Big Owe".

St. Louis can't be planning for one. The Edward Jones Dome is only like 12-13 yrs old. I think right now they are just trying to keep the Rams in STL. I'd love for Minnesota to get an outdoor stadium again.

That is BS. The only possibility is that people in the outfield might get pissed that they don't have the awesome view of the Atlanta skyline that people sitting behind home plate and along the first base line get to enjoy. If you're there to watch baseball, though, there are no "bad angles" in Turner Field.

well, now that the twins officially opened target field yesterday, baseball fans across the nation can take solace in the fact that our most sacred game will never again have to be played inside the god-awful abomination known as the metrodome.

and the marlins new stadium is well under cosntruction for its projected 2012 opening, so if the rays and A's can manage to get themselves into proper baseball facilities, then the league will be "complete" as far as facilities are concerned (barring potential expansion teams, obviously). has anybody heard any rumors about potential new facilities for those two ball clubs?

Last I heard, the A's are still hinting at moving to Santa Clara but nothing concrete yet.

Nothing about the Ray's new stadium. Shame too as it's a really nice stadium.

The A's are waiting for MLB's blue ribbon committee to give its report. They are considering three options: a new location in Oakland's Jack London Square, Fremont and downtown San Jose. The last one will require changing the Giants' territorial rights, which is probably why the report has been delayed. My guess is there is a lot of back-room negotiation going on to open Santa Clara county to the A's, and once the compensation package for the Giants is agreed upon MLB will come out with their recommendation to move to SJ. Who knows when that will happen, though.

Am I alone in thinking the "retro" part of the retro stadium craze is already dead?

For at least a few years now the designs have clearly not been retro. Detailed and open-aired yes, but just because they aren't concrete cookie cutters doesn't mean they are faux historic. Just because they might use brick here and there doesn't make them retro (and some of them don't have a single brick anywhere to be found).

I mean... can we really call these "retro":

not all of the ballparks in the modern ballpark era are retro, as you've shown, but you can't call the retro craze dead either, just look at last year's new yankee stadium and citifield in NYC. both of them are retro inspired. and busch stadium from 2006 is retro inspired as well.

though this year's new target field in minneapolis is refreshingly modern.

^I was just about to say that upon seeing Target Field. Like Cirrus, I read all this discussion about the retro era but Target didn't look retro at all when I decided to take a look at the stadium for myself. I think a more appropriate term would be open aired when discussing the current trend while roping in the non-retro stadiums into the category.

btw while I'm at it, here's Seattle's tranformation (as if nobody is aware...):

Seattle Kingdome (erect for less than 25 years)

and Seahawk Stadium nextdoor:

it's best to think of it as just the modern era of ball park design, kicked-off by US cellular field in 1991, which was definitely not retro when it opened, but it was the first baseball-only facility built by an MLB team in over a generation. and since then, every single other MLB ball park that has been built has been a baseball-only facility, regardless of whether or not it's been wrapped with retro detailing or covered with a retractable roof.

I think the new Target Field is by far the best non-retro new park. Even though fiels like Cinergy in Cincinnati, Nats parks in D.C., Petrco in S.D. etc. are good they don't put it altogether as well as Target Field seems too IMO.

The DOme is 15 this year. God the Rams suck. Give us our American League baseball team back.

When people say retro, they sometimes mean something that is not the rather drab, geometric piles of cement that dominated for so many years. Some retro element (brickwork, coloration, old-time signage), whimsy, supergraphics or just some glass and shiny metal really adds to the excitement of the experience.

The Seattle pictures are quite an eye-opener on how bad and how much better it can get.

StL is a baseball town but there's no way they could support a AL team in addition to the Cardinals. I assume you weren't being serious.
