How do they decide where to erect the crane?

I look at many construction sites and I see the crane is placed in various places with respect to the building and was wondering how they decide where to put the crane.

At its most basic, you figure out where the trucks are going to stop, and where the building is, so you can pick stuff off trucks and drop in in place on the building with the fewest number of crane moves. You want a spot where the crane can rotate to be able to access as much of the site as possible, ideally without potential for contact or conflict with adjacent structures or obstacles.

Most sites will actually have a "crane pick plan" which will lay out in detail exactly how the crane will move almost all the material onto the building, planned out months in advance.
