nawwh let chicago have the 2k+ footers, it's a natural midwestern inclination to way overdue it, like the hotdogs and pizza lol!

actually i would not have been opposed to one at the wtc site, just better or even plainer than the o.g. childs design. i'm not big on the shard/kingdom tower style either, at least for nyc. something more classic and...real...meaning occupied all the way up to the spire, for an nyc super duper tall.

Actually, what might look good is building a couple 2k footers on one of the boroughs that are across the river (in between downtown and midtown). That could possibly add to the skyline from many angles, while not looking completely out of place.

It would look like a small super tall skyline overlooking a massive semi tall and dense skyline. It would be close enough to be almost a part of it, but far enough as to not look so out of place.

Here Now, a Vision for a Rezoned Midtown East in 2040

August 13, 2012
by Sara Polsky

Quote:

A plan recently put forward by the city would rezone Midtown East, allowing NYC's skyline to expand upward over 74 blocks from 37th Street to 57th Street between Second and Fifth avenues. There are some restrictions: taller buildings must occupy entire avenues of blockfront and 25,000-square-foot lots, meaning that most of the development will take place right around Grand Central. Still, that leaves plenty of opportunities for upward expansion. Former Curbed intern and architecture student William Weber imagined what that might look like, in the first installment of a new feature.

The future is bright, no doubt about it. We just have to be patient and we'll get our 2000 footer(s).

It's the infamous William Beaver House.

Hopefully it will be demolished in the future to make way for a taller, better building.

You're right, but that is the current situation since after 9/11. Before that, the former WTC( although shorter than the Sears Tower by 86 feet) was enough to tie New York's and Chicago's skylines by overall height of all the buildings. After the Sears, the Twins and the ESB were the 2nd,3rd, and 4th tallest buildings in the US respectively. With 1 WTC, 432 Park, One 57, and other projects rising, NYC might regain that title again if Chicago doesn't get any demand in the future. But for better or worse, they are both the cities that have the potential to build the first 2,000 footer in the Western world.

Yeah, it would be pretty cool if Chicago can boost some supertalls too. Right now NY is pretty much alone in the U.S. :-/

By 2014/15 it will probably look like this:

By pinnacle height:

Chicago:
1. Willis Tower, 527m
2. John Hancock Center, 457m
3. Trump International Hotel & Tower, 423m
4. Aon Center, 346m
5. AT&T Corporate Center, 307m
6. Two Prudential Plaza, 303m

New York:
1. One World Trade Center, 545m
2. Empire State Building, 449m
3. 432 Park Avenue, 426m
4. Bank of America Tower, 366m
5. Three World Trade Center, 352m*
6. Conde Nast Building, 341m
7. Chrysler Building, 319m
8. New York Times Tower, 319m
9. Hudson Yards South Tower, 310m**
10. One57, 306m

By roof height:

Chicago:
1. Willis Tower, 442m
3. Trump International Hotel & Tower, 357m
3. Aon Center, 346m
4. John Hancock Center, 344m

New York:
1. 432 Park Avenue, 426m
2. One World Trade Center, 419m
3. Empire State Building, 381m
4. Three World Trade Center, 329m*
5. Hudson Yards South Tower, 310m**
6. One57, 306m

* if construction resumes (currently at the 7th floor)
** construction should begin this fall

Let's hope Chicago comes back on track.

Assuming everything goes as planned, these will be the skyscrapers with roof heights over 300M in NYC at various stages of completeion, construction and site prep by 2020:

Key:
: No work has been done on this building at the time of this post
: Site prep, no matter how minimal, has been done at the time of this post
: Construction is on hold
: The building is under construction
■ : The building has been completed

Grand Central Tower ~500M (Site Prep by 2020)
225 W57th ~450M (Completed by 2020)
432 Park -425M (Completed by 2016)
One World Trade Center -417M (Completed 2013)
Two World Trade Center -411M (Completed by 2020)
Hudson Yards North Office Tower -394M (Completed by 2018)
Empire State Building -381M (Completed 1931)
15 Penn -371M (Site Prep by 2020)
One Manhattan West -371M (Completed by 2020)
Three World Trade Center -327M (Completed by 2018)
Girasole -323M (Completed by 2020) (Possibly +400M)
Tower Verre -320M (Completed by 2018)
Hudson Yards South Office Tower -310M (Completed by 2015)
One57 -306M (Completed 2013)
34th and 10th Street +304M (Site Prep by 2020)
One Hudson Yards +304M (Completed by 2020)
Hudson Yards Mixed-used Tower +304M (U/C by 2020)
237 Park +304M (Site Prep by 2020)

After finishing this list all I could think of was "Whoa!"

This decade will rewrite the books when it comes to the skyline of NYC if even half of this stuff gets built, but I'm very confident that the vast majority of these buildings will get built. Not to mention the ones that haven't even been revealed yet.

No info on Grand Central Tower so far. It won't start to really move forward until the rezoning of East Midtown goes through, so I think anything solid is a few years away. But since it'll be rezoning the largest CBD in the world, across the street from GCT, I'm confident once the rezoning does get approved, that will instantly become one of the most valuable developable sites in the country, and should come together relatively quickly depending on what the economy is like then.

Also, Eidolon, that list made my jaw drop. It's one thing to have all those towers rattling around in your head, but it's another to see them listed like that. By 2020 NY should be the near unanimous #1 skyline in the world. Certainly exciting times.

@sbarn und Eidolon: cool rendering and list!

Just found this on flickr... Grand Central Tower (or at least near it)?

A megatall (~2000 ft) tower in Midtown Manhattan.
Not a real proposal, just a hobby study.
Looks pretty nice imho.

Not that it doesn't already have an argument, but if a decent amount of these supertalls get built NYC will have a very strong claim again as the worlds most impressive skyline.

The mix of height/density/scale will be hard to match. Some cities already are or will be beating it in one category or the other but New York will have a pretty unique mix of the three if it has 15+ supertalls sprouting up in the midsts of its sea of other towers.

^ Absolutely. New York has the density, uniqueness, style and mass (250 skyscrapers over 500 feet!). All it lacks is height. With 1WTC, 4WTC and One57 nearing completion the skyline already got a height boost.

I did a quick calculation (based on official height, 1 and 4WTC included. One57 and 1715 Broadway are not included.):

Average height 10 tallest buildings: 334,7m (~1100ft)
Average height 50 tallest buildings: 243,4m (~800ft)

PS: As of now NY has 56 buildings exceeding 200m (656ft).
