Portland: The First Week

As of last Saturday, the 17th of September, 2011, I officially moved into my dorm at Portland State University, and with it, Portland became my new home. In the past week, I have managed to fill up two SD cards with photos and get over one hundred decent results. I have taken photos in every style I know, from subtle street art to epic, insane sunset HDRs. While today actually marks the seventh day of taking photos, and I did take photos today, I still haven't finished editing them and, so far, I'm not really liking the results. Without further ado, I present to you what happens when a teenage photographer suddenly gains untold freedom in a completely new city and one week with no worries or concerns whatsoever.

Cue the music:

This board continues to convince me that there's WAY too many worthwhile cities in America to possibly explore all of them the way they should be explored. I haven't even visited all the worthwhile cities on the West Coast, and Portland sticks out like a sore thumb on my to-visit list... these pictures make it look absolutely beautiful. Thanks for this... I'm looking forward to seeing your future takes on the city as you become more familiar with it.

Awesome job. These bring back memories of my brief days at Portland State years ago. I lived at 4th and Ankeny, and would love walking across all of downtown to get to class in the morning.

It seems like a lot has changed since I moved in to Broadway a few years ago. I still miss that building and the good times I had there with my PDX friends. It's crazy there's a Ben & Jerrys outside the Gym / Urban Center now. We had to go all the way to the Pearl or 23rd st to get some. Director Park looks pretty lively, I will never forget I was really depressed right before leaving Portland and I went there at 4 in the morning while it was raining and felt sad because I wouldn't be there in the summer to see whether it would become successful or not. The Park in SoWa was about to open but the pushed the date back to after I moved and my friends and I still talk about not being able to go together. Anyway... sorry for the long rant. I hope you enjoy PSU and Portland! Thanks for posting I look forward to seeing more as you explore the city.

Impressive photos. Portland has such a beautiful downtown, blending modern and classic. Views from the waterfront are pretty sweet too.

This street scene looks very European.

I've actually been doing all my own cooking so far. The only time I ate out was grabbing lunch at the Chipotle on the ground floor of my dorm. No doubt in the next few weeks, I'll be eating out more, and hopefully I'll have my camera with me.

I'm glad to know there's another Padres fan (based on your avatar) up here. I have plenty of dorm mates and classmates from San Diego, but none of them care about sports!

Chipotle? Your in the hipster food capital of the US and you went to Chipotle. NO!

First lesson for college: Don't eat at the dorm unless you like to get food poisoning. Seriously.

And where are the girls? Your on a campus sworming with them and yet not a single one popped up in any photos. Dude. Doood! dude.

In a twist of fate, you're somewhat right. I brought all my own pots and pans so I can do my own cooking because I like to cook. First night, I made a grilled cheese. I managed to give myself food poisoning.

As for the girls, well . . . let's just say work in progress. I don't know what I'm going to do for dinner: I have no groceries to cook with and nobody to really go with anywhere. I'll figure something out, Joe, don't worry.

Beautiful collection, man -- thanks for bringing your talented eye to Portland. Make sure to hit some of the food carts near PSU ... cheap great food everywhere, if you get tired of poisoning yourself Welcome!

Welcome to Portland! I've been here a little less then a year and also lived in Sacramento, like you, for quite a while. This is a pretty sweet place. Awesome photos, as always.
