Not really; I have only been here for a week.

Nice place, really.

Most people I've talked to go to Syracuse for the day to make a shopping excursion out of it; especially given the american stores we don't have here in Canada; not specifically to save money...

100% with you on that one. It looks like a theme park, all it's missing are some rides in the background and mascots running around.

Yep and I think they have already started with it? It will be located between the current one and the bridge. It should have more upscale stores. I don't know where the third and final phase is supposed to go.

Yeah, you are right. My time is just more valuable than saving a few dollars and I spend it much more willingly on hiking trails than at malls. But I am sure many enjoy their shopping excursions.

This is far better than the usual glass facade retail that have been lining the streets for the past couple decades. Kitsch, faux, whatever. There's a variety of colour and materials that make this shopping area far more interesting than most.

Exactly!! Plus the materials used seem to be pretty decent quality.

It's the Disney school of architecture. Good for you if you like it. I find it depressing. I don't have to "loosen up" to something I find mediocre and devoid of even a shred of creative architecture or design. But, granted, I hate outlet malls, I hate the suburbs, so these things are simply not for me.

I saw my old Future Shop store (in Surrey BC) is now converted to a Best Buy. Didn't get a chance to get a picture....

Has anyone else seen or have a pics of this is their town or noticed it happening?

I agree that it looks Disney Kitsch. It looks like most outdoor outlet malls. It is so tacky, and worst of all it tries to create some kind of fake village feel and yet is surrounded by a sea of parking. At least it is out of the way and is put on land that wouldn't be used for much else anyways.

Is there any American stores left that haven't opened in Canada?

In the Calgary area you also probably have more than most anywhere in the country except the GTA.

Quebec is generally slower to get them because of the language issue but even in Ottawa (where there is no French language requirement) there are many American chains that are not present but that you can find in, say, Syracuse.

I think one factor in this is Calgary's relative isolation. For american brands that are not local I online shop. This gives them a huge data set on customer preferences and makes local entry a bit easier.

Your high incomes are likely a big turn-on for them as well.
