Smile Heimdall - a Martian sketchup city

After decades of strange weather and powerful storms it became clear that mankind didn't have to fear global warming or melting polar ice caps, instead it turned out that it was the gulfstream that was changing and a new iceage was beginning..

For the people in the Nordic countries this was their worst fear comming true as it would mean certain destruction of all their nations..

Years was spend trying to buy and negotiate new territory for the Nordic people to immigrate to and start over - but no one was willing to sell or even accept the millions of soon to be nationless Norse as the world economy was still strugling after the great depression of 2010 and the NATO-OPEC war of 2015.. all hope seemed lost..

But the Norse was never the ones to quit and go quietly into the night so instead the made a drastic new plan, not only for a new nation, but for a new planet!

Operation Heimdall
Operation Heidall ( meaning "home" ) - named after the Norse God Heimdall - Defender of Vahalla and gatekeeper to Asgard - would have the people of the North immigrating to the planet Mars where they would start over and build a socialist utopia with room and equal rights for all, poor or rich..

In the beginning it was a slow process, but as the northern part started freezing over people became very willing to donate and invest and soon the first couple of rockets was on their way...

The first step would be to build a city on Mars that would serve as political capital and a home base for all the newcomers from Earth - it had to not only be a place where people could survive, but a place where people could thrive and live full and rich lifes just as they had back on Earth...

It wouldn't be an easy task, but it had to be done....

DAM DAM DAAAAAM!!!!!

HEIMDALL
- The Martian City -

Welcome to my new Sketchup project - it's kinda out there yes, but I was tired of making normal cities so I desided to try something new and as Mars is one of my biggest interests I desided to make a city there..

Before you laugh and all that I think I should mention that humans living on Mars isn't that unrealistic - the gravity is about 40% of Earth, so walking around takes some getting used to, but it's not like the moon where you bounce everytime you fart and a Marsian day is 24h and 20 min meaning that it will take little adjustment to get used to the day night cycle, but who wouldn't like 20 min longer days?
The downside is that Mars doesn't have a magnetic field, so even if you did terraform it as some dream about walking outside would still be very dangerous and a solar flare would be leathal. Even the background radition would shorten your life significantly, so people will be forced to live inside pressurized buildings, but let's be honest, how many hours do we spend outside nowadays anyway - we drive to the mall from the house, then to work and for exercise we drive to a club..
It's not the perfect place to live, but with enough investment it could be just as good as anywhere on earth

We start off very early in the process - the Norse have just recently landed and have constructed the 3 Great Halls and will now be focussing on expanding outwards and upwards in the near future - so stay tuned!

Heimdall seen from "Thor's Rock", the place the first lander landed

Heimdall seen from "Odin's Eye" the geostationary communications satellite

More to come soon

Cool. I'd like to see some 20 story apartment buildings and such. Are you going to have everything separate or mixed up? By separate I mean like residential in a "pod," office in another one, parks with separate pods or integrated into other ones. And by mixed I mean everything all over.

Whatever you do, it's going to be gun watching this city grow.

^I will try to mix it all up as much as posible
Every major building has to be functionel by it's own incase something goes wrong, so the idea is that each have their own generators, water storage, oxygen storage and so on - and the city then works be being connected cell by cell

The low gravity and thin atmophere also allows for taller buildings than on Earth, so the future should have some supertalls on it's way, but in the beginning I'm gonna take it easy

Hmmm... Somethings I'd like to see would be:

1. The tallest building, mixed used.
2. Gardens on cells
3. A monorail or something.
4. A space port. Wow, this one's gonna be cool.
5. Skyscraper Gardens

And I know there's more but those are basics in a space port that I can think of.

How cool. I love and hate the idea.

I think that removal and relocation of earths materials out of our atmosphere will prove catastrophic , besides the fact its gonna impact the 'new planet' with earthly pollution and items that aren't natural to the planet.

These materials we have lost in space through exploration may have an effect already.

And where will we get water from ?,
There is also only a certain amount of it on Earth - Again its removal from our atmosphere WILL affect our ecosystem.

And then theres the Energy crisis !

We already killed one planet ! I think Humans should take one for the team and just die !!

Mars is home to everything we need.. Heimdall will be build by using space age plastics and nanotubes ( it is sci-fi after all )

All things indicates that Mars has enough water frozen into the ground ( tundra ) to cover the planet with meters of water.. so water shouldn't be the biggest problem to extract - plus the condensation from inside the buildings will also be extracted and reused for the agriculture domes and sprinkler systems

Sure in the long run it may be possible, But getting there economically and succesfully would be a hard task if your world is already collapsing.

I just don't do fiction But enjoy fantasy.

Heimdall Gov Center was has been completed

This 225m tall massive building will be housing both the Parliament and the City Hall as well almost all government offices for the time being..
It's also here you will find the Martian Planetary Museum and the planet's largest ( and only ) domed iMax Cinema

Odin's Eye: More agriculture domes have also been added to accommodate the increased needs for food and oxygen..

Yes indeed - pretty exciting to see whats next

Do you do anything special in Kerk to get the solar glare that i can see running down the middle of Heimdall Gov Center ? I did it once but can't remember why or how !

p.s I liked the spelling as Marsian ! as the planet is not called Mart. Oh well

But can you seriously or even jokingly propose that a socialist utopia could do such a heroic endeavour as the colonization of another planet?!?!?!
that's an enterprise that could only private individual will, mind, stenght and spirit can achieve.

The soviets might have sent gagarin to space while the russsian population starved, but the Americans made the space profitable through telecommunication.

Very cool project in itself besides the political tinge which I'll promiss not to mention again - actually I wanted to do a totalitarian monoblock city as a joke - Please keep it up!
