Thanks Jonovision. I had looked for a recent picture of the finished facade but hadn't seen one until now.

Amazing that this took provincial govt intervention to get approved. Looks fairly innocuous. Makes one wonder what all the fuss was about.

IIRC a lot of the fuss had to do with underground infrastructure and sorting through who owned what and cleaning up legal issues (easements, etc.)

I wasn't referring to any of that. I was referring to HRM turning this down because of the obstructionist arguments of the Heritage Trust and Rodney MacDonald having to threaten to pass a bill in the NS Leg to make it happen. As it was, the province intervened at the UARB to argue that it should go forward, and the Board overturned HRM Council's decision.

Any word on what ground floor retail will be going in, if any?

I recall when the decision was made to gut these buildings that O'Carroll's was going to be given a place in the new building. Haven't heard anything to that effect recently.

I hope O'Carroll's comes back. Heard from colleagues it was a solid spot, but I never got to go because they closed it when I was 18....

O'Carrolls is not going back. RBC is going into that space I believe. And the operator, who ran the Hart & Thistle, went broke in that location so it will be some time before the issues with that are resolved. A shame, because O'Carrols was a good spot.

I remember going to O'Carroll's with family friends when I was fairly young (early teens). It seemed kind of similar to Five Fishermen or Henry House - fairly standard upscale pub food with an emphasis on seafood, in a kind of dimly-lit atmosphere. I remember it being good but not really out of the ordinary as far as Halifax restaurants go/went.

O'Carrolls had pub food on the pub side but rather nice food in the restaurant side.

A wood carving, supposedly made in the name of artwork.

That interior stone looks cool at night—Lord knows I'm no fan of facadism, but if you're standing on the northeast side of the street looking across and through the glass facade, it appears like the old building has been shoved straight into the new one. It's a neat effect.
