Trust me when I say. As someone who works with the mentally ill and homeless population. The LAST thing LA leaders need to be doing/thinking about is building affordable housing for the homeless along skid row. It wont help the problem. It will condense the problem. It will create a physical barrier between the arts district/east side of the downtown loop and the western/fig/South Park/Broadway section of the downtown loop. It wont house them and get them off the streets. It will draw more and more in and encourage other states to start bussing them in. We saw an uptick in people being bussed here so far this year. Some rules/laws on bussing were laxed earlier this year. Wonder why .

Great shots, Hunter. COS looks great. Such a huge improvement.

A reminder that there is a big opening this week on the roof of the Commercial Exchange Building/Freehand.

That's huge news. Maybe the biggest retail news story of DTLA since the Ralph's grocery opening. And I originally though the news story was a lie by owners trying to raise speculation to try to sell off their property in that area.

While it's great to see all these buildings put to better use and renovated, I just wish some of them were returned to their former glory as theatres.

I just don't get excited about an Apple Store the way I once did.

If it were 2010, I'd be excited for an Apple Store. They are building one on Michigan Ave here in Chicago and a majority of people's reaction is 'meh.' It'll bring more people down to that side of the river but Apple is not as hot as it was. Still, it's good to have that business caliber on Broadway.

Not sure about you people in the Midwest...but at least in NYC, San Fran and Atlanta...Apple hasn't lost its buzz. Also, their sales represent the buzz is still there.

Apple is still certainly a popular brand, but the notion of an Apple Store as a destination (i.e. gathering folks) is not what it used to be. Which is what this thread is most concerned with. The Broadway Trade Center is going to be much more responsible for bringing people into the neighborhood than the Apple store. It's a nice ancillary piece, but it won't be the primary driver.

^ That's a very astute point, and I fully agree. That being said, what this will do is activate that side of the street that much more. While Broadway Trade will draw a lot of people to the west side of Broadway, Apple will be a pull for the east side of that stretch, and along with Broadway Bar, Urban Outfitters, Umami and Two Boots, will help even out the activation of the area. GREAT win for the Historic Core.

On the Yale/Ord park in Chinatown, I really hope they incorporate some or all of those mature trees into the park itself. Seems stupid to just tear them out, like they did with a lot of the already maturing trees in the Cornfiled park. That shit takes like 10-15 years to get back to what it is now.

Add in all the new retail coming in like Vans and Theory, etc and 8th to 11th is going to be great if this is true

On these blazing hot 100 degree days, does construction continue at normal rate? Do they work at night also? Cooler.

Is Chinatown zoned for tall buildings? Sure would help with the housing shortage. But keep the trees too.

I agree. And plant some native live oak and sycamore trees too. Trees clean the air and provide shade. Would love to see the entire L.A. River restored to the riparian woodlands that once existed with willows, sycamores & oaks.

Great to see Broadway coming back to life. Much more needs to be done in terms of restoration and cleanliness. It's probably my favorite corridor of DTLA.
