I think the optical quality vs. build applies mostly to older zoom lenses. The kit lenses of today are almost always better than older zooms. Old prime lenses generally have optical quality that meets today's standards. One area that has improved greatly in recent years are the lens coatings. Some older lenses may have low contrast with backlighting or be prone to flare. Others are not optimized for digital sensors and may have noticeable chromatic aberration. Even so, many of the classic Nikkor, Leica or Zeiss primes are still in demand today. Often the older lenses render images with a certain look that people are after. These qualities are certainly why people still use the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 or the Vivitar Series 1 90mm macro. I don't think anyone seriously bothers with 1970s zoom lenses.

I sold my Tokina 11-16mm and Nikkor 18-200mm, then added two new lenses to my Nikkor collection.

One of Nikkor's sharpest lenses for the DX format.
The 17-55mm f/2.8 is a beautiful piece of glass.

And Nikkor's newest DX super wide angle lens.

Now my gear now consists of these lenses.
Nikkor 35mm F/1.8
Nikkor 50mm F/1.8
Nikkor 85mm F/1.8
Nikkor 105mm F/2.8 VR Macro
Nikkor 10-24mm F/3.5
Nikkor 17-55mm F/2.8
Nikkor 70-300mm VR

I'm finally done for lenses...
Next upgrade will be Nikon's next DX body, hopefully they release it later this year, or early 2013.

FX is still a tad pricey for my wallet.

Well, after buying a Zeiss 35mm f1.4, and selling that lens for the Zeiss 25mm f2, I've finally landed back with the 35mm f1.4. It's just too good of a lens to not have. Anyways, my next lens will be a tilt shift.

No new D700s to be found, so I went ahead and pre-ordered the D800. If I got in early enough I will have it by month end. If not, could be a long wait.

^^Nice, I'm jealous. It'll be a very, very long time before I go full frame.

Sweet that's a nice camera. I think it beats the MK III and it's $500 cheaper. I even contemplated switching brands but the cost to do so is freakin' insane. I want to go FF, so I'm going to stick with Canon and get the MKIII.

It will be interesting to see some legit side by beside comparisons and see how both cameras stack-up.

I think you will get good use out of it. It will be really handy next time you do a photoshoot. You will be able to crop amazing pics from almost anything.

I have seen a side by side and they are actually so similar that it is ridiculous. The only big difference is the mp's. But you cant really go wrong wither way.

Thanks for the link. I've been checking out the forums on dpreview and it's amazing how rabid fanboys from either camp get.
I managed to find a store in town that had a 5D MKIII in stock. It's now sitting on my desk waiting for me to take it home. Needless to say, but this has been the longest day of my life.

D800 should work well for me...I was worried about having to upgrade most of my glass after going FF, but even a DX lens on the D800 gives you a 4,800 x 3,200px file...larger even than my current D90. I'll replace the glass when I can,, and not worry about it too much.

Well, I just got a tilt shift lens, the Shneider 28mm f2.8, and I have to say... it's incredible! I love it! It's sort of a pain to manually do aperture and such, but besides that, I really find the lens incredible.

Haven't taken a pic of my new body yet as I'm not willing to put it down. I've very pleased with this new camera. AF is amazing and the high ISO is pretty good. 6400 is very usable. Here's a pick with zero PP done to it. I'll post a high ISO pic later.

I would have had to take off early that day!

Sometimes I feel the limitations of my D90, but I think I'm going to hold off on buying a new camera for a while. I don't want to spend 3 grand on a D800 and the D7000 isn't that much better than the D90. The biggest reason I will wait is due to that big price gap between the D7000 and the D800. It seems logical that Nikon will introduce a new model somewhere in that $1500 to $2000 range. Maybe it will be what I'm looking for.

My biggest "want" is awesome high ISO performance, which seems to come along with a full frame sensor. I would also like the added wide angle capability of the full frame sensor. But I would also consider another DX model if it had substantially better high ISO than the D90 and a nice big viewfinder (like the D7000). About 16 megapixels would be perfect.

So, if they want to sell me a camera, basically Nikon has to come out with an update to the D7000 or introduce a semi-pro FX model.

^^good point, the D300 is due to be replaced. Nikon needs a flagship DX model, since the D7000 is better than the D300 in many respects. It would also fit right into that price gap.

I checked out a D7000 in more detail over the weekend and it's better than I thought. It would be a real upgrade to the D90 and has a lot of little features packed into it. Tempting, but I'll wait to see what Nikon has on offer later this year (I'd still like to move to FX).
