Justin Strong, Bridesmaids, and AE Bridger are all performing at Factory tonight.

The voices on these guys are just perfection.

There's some sort of modern marketing thing going on with this guy. He relatively recently released an album that locals went mad for, and has barely been seen since. Maybe he's really shy or something? I don't know. But he's certainly building up the hype. It's almost what Jenny Gear did years ago before that reality show.

The Once did their world tour with Passenger, and he contributed quite a lot - to one song in particular, which is about him - on their new album.

So tonight I was going back through all their duets. It's not a Canadian song, but it is my favourite local band (The Once) singing with him. One of my favourites - their voices all suit this sort of soft, strained ballad.

time to post some more music on this thread again..

Tonight & broadcast on TSN, is the last Rider football game at the 106 year old Taylor field in Regina.
Mosaic Stadium @ Taylor field is being torn down next year once Riders move to the New Mosaic Stadium.

http://leaderpost.com/news/local-new...mosaic-stadium

The Half Time show at the game tonight will feature Saskatchewan's Jess Moskaluke performing in front of 35,000. Jess has won the CCMA female artist of the year award more consecutive times than any other women this century, including Shania Twain.

As you can see in the first video, Jess is amazing at one-take recordings. One of my favorites was recorded a couple weeks ago for the Forever Country Series and is of Little Big Town's Girl Crush, members of the group she has worked with before.

Over the past few weeks, quite a few local bands have released new albums.

One of the most unexpected, to me, at least... Damhnait Doyle is back. She did "California Song" and "Tattooed", both of which did well across Canada, and then joined the band Shaye with another Newfoundlander and a Prince Edward Islander. Their song "Happy Baby" did well also. She got tired of that and left, and kept a pretty low profile. She released an album of cover songs, which was really quite good - especially her dark Abba covers.

Now, she's hooked up with some of the guys behind the scenes of Shaye and started a new band, the Heartbroken. They've just released their new album. It's only been profiled on CBC locally, but seems to be doing better nationally than it is here. They've been on all the morning shows in TO, etc.

And, as I mentioned in a previous post a while ago, my favourite band, The Once, have a new album out - fresh off touring the world opening for Passenger.

And Green & Gold's latest album - it's not really out yet, but they've done some promotions. I was waiting for a Youtube video but it's never going to come, so CBC interview and performances instead:

http://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2689206003

They're basically a local show band - everyone knows who they are, they do all the pubs, get great crowds and reactions, but very few people could list more than five or six original songs by them to you.

And something small, but very exciting, with tempered excitement.

Saint John Idol, the one in New Brunswick, had a contestant who performed a song by our Brianna Gosse, who isn't really yet - to the best of my knowledge - really known on the mainland. So if the actual music lovers in Maritime cities are starting to connect with the scene here, in any form, that's not only promising but completely new.

Now, for all I know, this girl could be from Newfoundland. That could be it, so that's why my excitement is tempered. But I get the impression she's from New Brunswick, and knows who Brianna Gosse is. Brianna has done the soundtracks for some American sitcoms, but that's not something where she'd get name recognition on the mainland.

And one old one of the original herself, different song, of course:

CBC has been pumping the tires of Nuela Charles. Not sure if she has ever had any rotation on Bounce. Bounce has been the primary reason why there are so many female r&b artists coming out of Edmonton. So probably I guess.

Speaking of R&B, some old school stuff from the 1970s. The origins of Edmonton's blues scene: The Hot Cottage Blues Band.

Never heard of Nuela Charles before but a lot of artists from http://www.thebounce.ca/ radio Bounce Showdown contest in Edmonton have gained a lot of success, maybe not nationally, but definitely internationally. Most notably, Shiloh from Regina winning the contest in 2006 and Kressha Turner from Edmonton in 2005, plus also topping the US Billboard Dance chart in 2008 with Don't Call Me Baby

This year, Ruth B from Edmonton has been in high rotation on contemporary radio stations, from what i've noticed in Saskatchewan. Working with New Zealand producer Joel Little who helped Lorde create her first album. Ruth B's single Lost Boy has risen to top 20 charts in Denmark & Sweden and top 25 in US.

Mathieu Holubowski, great great musician from Montreal, discovered on The Voice last year. I love his sound which is somehow well suited both for english and french songs.

Franco-Albertan band from Edmonton. Reminds me a bit of the Acadian band, Reveil for some reason.

I heard this on CBC on the way home. Jordan Hart & Emily Schultz are buskers in Toronto; a CBC producer overheard them performing on Queen Street and setup a session in Union Station to record several of their songs. This cover of Nat King Cole's Nature Boy is incredible:

Very cool synth duo from the 'Peg, they have a darker sound but sort of remind me of a recent video release from a synthpop duo from Saskatoon with a kaleidoscopy, psychedelic look but with a 80's pop sound.

Speaking of Saskatoon, one of the biggest Rock groups from that city did a xmas show in Saskatoon on the weekend.
The video Satellite Hotel won the band and engineer Eric Ratz a JUNO for Engineer of the Year at last years awards.

I bought The Once's Christmas CD. So here are a few of the songs from it not yet on YouTube.

The first is Gabriel's Message, one of the Christmas songs I most associate with my childhood, being forced to sing it in school and at church.
