Er, I don't think many construction crews actually live in SF or shares its ethos, if you get my drift. I think generally they live--or at least would be more "at home" in, say, Modesto.

I usually use my "eccentric old fart" persona to get info out of them--usually works.

I've been thinking of developing a "weird dude who was a laborer many years ago (I was very briefly, for a plumber), trying to catch up on today's techniques" persona. Although I should probably just tell them I'm a SF construction project blogger, which is pretty close to the truth.

I know I wouldn't, but what about another chicken?

I agree, just being honest would be best, otherwise get yourself a hard hat and maybe a roll of drawings to look more...ehhhh...

I can try to pull a Fletch and just march in like I belong there. "Come on guys...it's all ball bearings these days." I like it!

You might be suprised BT 'cause I know differently, even considering Central Valley Republican "conservative" construction dudes. Let me introduce you to a friend of mine...

A new piece of equipment was in use today for bringing the dirt from the bottom of the hole to the waiting trucks. This one has a much longer articulated arm than they have been using:

So, I'm going to say it for like the tenth time in this thread: they must be getting close to the bottom.

I may actually be right (for once!). Today, all the earth moving equipment is gone. In fact all the workers are gone. There isn't a soul on site. Perhaps Malcolm finished up early and the pile crew isn't due onsite just yet.

I shot this yesterday. With no one around I could get a little closer and peer over the fence. Still can't see much, other than the lack any equipment in the hole:

Apparently more cement is making its way down to the bottom of the hole:

That crane is pretty tall:

I wish it was dropping a pile driver down there.

^They might not drive any piles.

Remember the infinity, all they did was dig a very deep hole and then pour a massive (over 10ft thick) mat foundation.

Good point. Either way, this one should be moving over to the Construction section before too long.

Good call, rocketman. That seems to be exactly what they're doing. Rebar is being assembled on the floor of the hole today. This also explains why they went so much deeper than I thought was needed for just 3 levels of parking. Additionally, it's all Webcor onsite now, which makes sense since they're starting on the cement part of the project. I'll post a couple of photos tonight.

So, like I said, lots o' rebar being lowered into the hole:

And being assembled:

So, can this be moved to the construction forum? It's not the concrete yet, but it's definitely the first permanent part of the building.

BTW, sorry about the quality of the photos. It's the closest I could get.

Doesn't rebar count as "construction" enough to move it from "proposals"?

They've started assembling the tower crane in the northeast corner of the site. Pictures at 11.

There is a lot of rebar down there, it's just very hard to get a good look at it:
