Mayor Landrieu, Aviation Board, 750 Workers Celebrate New Airport Construction Milestone
NOVEMBER 17, 2017
Louis Armstrong Airport North Terminal Project Reaches New High
1
NEW ORLEANS– Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, the New Orleans Aviation Board and local elected officials joined nearly 750 workers as the highest steel beam was placed on the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport’s (MSY) new North Terminal site, marking a major milestone for the $993.7 million project. The “topping out” ceremony is a centuries old tradition marking the installation of the highest part of a structure. The beam was signed by all of the nearly 750 workers on-site as well as local officials and airport employees.

“It was an honor to join the construction crew today as we marked this major construction milestone for the North Terminal project,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “Through this project, we are delivering on our commitment to ensure that the people of New Orleans rebuild New Orleans. A diverse workforce is hard at work building this new terminal, and I am proud to see the progress we are making.”
The beam placed today is the highest of approximately 34,000 pieces of structural steel that make up the terminal building. Before being installed, the beam was adorned with the American flag and an evergreen tree for good luck and prosperity for the future occupants of the building.
Other project milestones already achieved include:
Placing an estimated 1.7 million cubic yards of surcharge material
Installing nearly 16.1 million linear feet of wick drains
Installing all 7,520 pilings needed to support the terminal, concourses, central utility plant, parking garage, and elevated roadway

Chairwoman for the New Orleans Aviation Board Cheryl Teamer said, “This is a monumental project for the state and region that we are excited to celebrate today alongside the many construction workers who have worked to get the project to this stage. This project has afforded opportunities to a multitude of local businesses and DBEs and has created new jobs for people throughout the region. We are excited to keep this project moving and look forward to having a new terminal in 2019.”
Director of Aviation for Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport Kevin Dolliole said, “This is an exciting project milestone that celebrates the dedication of all the workers that have had a hand in this project. The new terminal will be a major part of New Orleans for decades to come and is an important piece of infrastructure that will be more than just a building; it will be the new gateway to New Orleans and the Gulf South region.”
Announced in April 2013, the new North Terminal is currently under construction on the north side of the existing Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) property, creating thousands of new construction jobs and significant opportunities for local businesses and disadvantaged business enterprises (DBEs) in the region. In total, the approximately 972,000 square-foot terminal will feature three concourses, 35 gates, and a 2,190-car parking garage. It will also feature modern passenger conveniences like an in-line baggage system and a consolidated checkpoint. The new North Terminal is set to open in February 2019.
Based on an economic impact study by Timothy Ryan, Ph.D., after the new terminal is completed, MSY will support more than 64,000 jobs, $6.4 billion in local spending, and $2.4 billion in local earnings. The airport’s economic impact will increase approximately 20 percent in the next six years.
