Same here. I got to see a lot of university buildings get built, but nothing to speak of in campustown

5 tower cranes currently in Champaign, will be surprised if there are ever more than that in operation at one time.

309 E Green update... It appears that within the last few days the tower crane has elevated.

^Great update, thanks. I'm used to IMPE. Activities and Recreation center sounds way too generic. They are doing so much construction down there!

No one is happy with the name change, just leave well enough alone!

Champaign Mega-Update

There is a TON of stuff happening in Champaign right now. So I'm hijacking this thread to do a sort of "boom rundown" mass update.

310 Burnham This thing is big, in a part of town that's never had anything big.

309 E Green in the background

Who doesn't know this IHOP?

507 E Green

I'm not allowed to rent at That's Rentertainment anymore - long story.

New Dorms

An Apartment Building

Green St Infill

Memorial Stadium

Green St doesn't look like it used to.

Neither does Springfield

Bonus pic! "The Lodge", our junior year home, is still standing!! We thought it was going to fall apart 11 years ago.

Thanks Aaron. Saved me a trip down there. Do you know if they are going to 'spruce-up' the cladding of Memorial Stadium, or are they just going to leave it old and crusty?

^^^I didn't see any work being done on the East side of the stadium, but I didn't look that closely.
So if they're doing a spruce-up, they haven't started.

As a current U of I student keenly interested in the current round of construction, here are a couple panorama shots I've taken looking East on Green.

These are from late January, but you can still get a pretty good perspective on things. The 309 is beneath the crane in the center right, 507 Green is visible behind the 309 as just the frame, and the burnham 310 is to the far left. I would hope this would bring rents down, but the any change will probably be negligible.

^^^Those are sweet panoramas, thanks! You've got a nice view.

Can you do us a favor and retake those shots this spring before the semester ends?

Wish I could, but I took these from my ex girlfriend's place, and my apartment is much less scenic However, I did walk by the burnham on saturday and construction is coming along nicely.

All East side work is going to be improving the interior. New bathrooms and concession stands are going in on the lower concourse. Additionally, they're expanding the weight room and other football-related facilities. As far as I know, there aren't any exterior improvements in the works right now.

Next phase for this project will be the south end of the stadium. Current plans are to do something like this:

Tall campus-area buildings nearly set for occupants (news-gazette.com)

The Whopper

A 24-story student apartment complex at 309 E. Green St. on the site of former Burger King. First seven floors are parking, with ground-floor retail, eighth-floor pool and fitness center and 16 levels of upscale urban apartments. Half the residential floors to open by mid-August, the rest in January.

That building (309) doesn't look like it will be ready by the fall to me but I could be wrong. The entire spring semester it really seemed to creep along.

Furthermore, about this possible second phase...

There is essentially zero space to the south of the stadium. What is going to happen to Florida/Kirby?

It's beeyoootyful! Such character, such ornate details!

I lived in a similar old house on Lincoln Ave near University Ave...I can't describe the joy I felt when I saw a crane taking chunks out of it.

Don't ever believe a developer who says their apartments will be finished by fall. 90% of the time, they aren't.
But it's getting tall, Green St. already looks a lot different.
