42nd Street's New Pod Hotel and Residences Reaches Full Height
December 16, 2016
Quote:
The 70s called and they want their building back. The concrete fortress, which has fully risen at the southwest corner of Ninth Avenue and 42nd Street, would strike fear in any post-war commie-block. When we first saw the renderings in 2013 we were expecting the worst, and yet the new reveal has still managed to disappoint us. Standing 28-stories, 341-feet-tall, 400 West 42nd Street was designed by SLCE Architects and presents the public with a raw concrete exterior, a mundane array of transparent windows and rows of exhaust grilles above a sterile glass-fronted base.

If this were clad in a light stone veneer, it honestly wouldn't be half bad. I'm assuming those blank walls will eventually have ads plastered on them anyway.

^^^^

That last angle looks quite nice. However, the blank walls, as already pointed out, ruins what little it has going for it. 5/10

^while this one certainly isn't going to win any beauty pageants, I guess it's not that bad?

Don't get me wrong, if I was the developer never in a million years would I have picked this design, but it has sort of a cool industrial/brutalist look to it. Plus I think it at least looks better than the zebra building next door. I know, setting the bar pretty low. #whenlifegivesyoulemons
