To spin my broken record again... A grocery store here would be GREAT.

I understand conventional grocery store margins are thin, but I'm really at a loss why more companies aren't doing urban format grocery stores like Sobeys Urban fresh in Tribeca, or the Farm Boy on McRae - at least in urban grocery store deserts.
And a grocery store at Carling and Preston could probably charge ~10% more than a typical grocery store and still get plenty of customers anyway, so the business case is probably fairly solid.

So in other words, a Sobeys?

More or less. The Sobeys Urban Fresh format charges above-market rates for many products with the goal of providing an above-average experience. The Sobeys Urban Fresh on Metcalfe is the one of the nicest grocery stores I've ever been in. With a store that nice, and it being a very convenient option for nearby residents who live carless, it can get away with charging more.

My brother lives about 100 metres from the Independent at Bank and Somerset but he does pretty much all of his shopping at Sobeys, even though it's both further away (1 minute walk vs. maybe a 6 or 7 minute walk) and more expensive, because the Sobeys is so much nicer.

I wasn't referring to the Urban Fresh format stores. Even the regular Sobeys are a bit more expensive than other chains, but, similar to your brother, I do shop there more often than the local YIG, mostly for convenience. Not only is it a bit closer, but the size and layout are better. For example, most grocery stores put the milk in the farthest corner in hopes that you will see something else (maybe some clothes or even a TV) and buy it (one has to wonder how long it will be before Loblaws starts selling cars in their Superstores). At Sobeys it is on the back wall, but in the middle of the store. The entrance is also in the middle of the store, so you can easily bypass sections you don't need.

As I mentioned in the Icon thread, I will likely be able to see Icon, and the 2 taller towers from this development going up from my back yard/house (I live south of Brookfield road), as I have an almost unobstructed view of that part of Ottawa from my neighbourhood (well, to the west, north-west of the Canada post building). Should be cool to see them all on the horizon in the future...

I don't think it's dead, just dormant. I assume they are just focusing on smaller (relatively) projects in areas with less competition, like Rideau. They usually just do one condo building at a time.

I think it might take 10-15 years before this one is launched. It's quite a large project for Richcraft. Or they might end up selling the project (and increased height) to another developer in a few years.

Otto's BMW has moved back to their original newly renovated location on Hunt Club road. Talked to a guy in a Richcraft pick up on site and nothing is happening on this site soon. He did let me know which project will most likely be next. See the post on that thread

Former Dow Honda site has had a "For Lease" sign up for a while now and just recently started renting out pay parking. Given that the approval process has been completed but Richcraft is not really involved in the highrise market anymore I suspect the lot will eventually be sold to another big builder.

Unless it's a player from outside the city, i dont really see it any time soon. Claridge, Trinity, Brigil, Mastercraft Starwood all have enough on the go already.

We're looking at a potential supply glut in a few years with all the units being added. I'm not optimistic this gets built before the new Civic opens.

Elections Canada has started to set up at the site. Seems a bit early for an October election. Not surprised since they used old dow honda for the last election.

Looks like a change in plans for this site. Check out the new name on the building...

How have we not heard about this? You'd think the first Tesla dealership would be big news. Frankly surprised we didn't get one earlier since we have a decent amount on the road.

The former Dow Honda showroom seems to be empty after elections Canada moved out but the service bays seem to taken over by Tesla. No idea if there are plans for an actual showroom to be set up. Currently no signage on Carling or Preston at this point. I only noticed this when I stopped in to use the ATM at CIBC.

So will this be a service shop for Tesla? That building has no frontage on any main thoroughfare so would be unusual to contain a showroom, unless they're going to occupy the building beside it also.

Edit: a google search for "Tesla Ottawa" maps this location as a service center. Showroom unclear.

I heard about this. It was my understanding that Dow Honda was going to become a service specialist for Tesla. This will not be a showroom unless the plans have changed. I ordered mine online and it came on a truck to my house a couple of weeks later; no sales people involved. There really aren't that many options for Teslas and the brand really sells itself IMO.

Since that time, Tesla has made a dramatic shift away from the traditional showroom model of car sales

Tesla will close most of its stores and only sell cars online
Described as a way to keep Tesla financially stable

By Andrew J. Hawkins@andyjayhawk Feb 28, 2019, 5:24pm EST

In a major shift, Tesla announced that it will only sell its vehicles online. The electric carmaker will close most of its stores over the “next few months” and lay off some retail employees. Tesla announced the move at the same time it said it will finally begin to sell its long-promised $35,000 Model 3.

Customers who purchase their Teslas online will have up to a week to return the car if they aren’t satisfied. In a call with reporters Thursday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he was confident that few customers would exercise this option. The move to e-commerce will help Tesla cut some operating expenses, as well as avoid dealing with local politics that have prevented it from operating its own stores in certain states including Connecticut, New Mexico and others.

Tesla will keep some of its retail locations open, which the company described as “a small number of stores in high-traffic locations remaining as galleries, showcases and Tesla information centers.” And there will be “some headcount reduction” as a result of the shift, Musk said Thursday.

“IT IS A HARD DECISION BUT I THINK IT’S THE RIGHT DECISION FOR THE FUTURE”
Musk wouldn’t say how many employees can expect to lose their jobs, nor whether these layoffs were factored into the “company-wide restructuring” that was announced in June 2018. “It is a hard decision but I think it’s the right decision for the future,” he said.

Tesla will “significantly” increase the number of service centers to meet the demand of its growing customer base, Musk added. The company offers mobile service, in which Tesla-branded repair vans can be summoned through the Tesla mobile app. Musk said the company’s service team would now report directly to him, with the goal of providing same-day service to all Tesla owners.

The decision to shift away from brick-and-mortar retail is necessary for the company to remain financially sustainable, Tesla said. The company’s finances have stabilized somewhat in recent months, but Tesla still operates on very tight margins. After two back-to-back profitable quarters, Musk said on the call he doesn’t anticipate earning a profit in the first quarter of 2019.

In a blog post, the company described the process for purchasing its vehicles online.

You can now buy a Tesla in North America via your phone in about 1 minute, and that capability will soon be extended worldwide. We are also making it much easier to try out and return a Tesla, so that a test drive prior to purchase isn’t needed. You can now return a car within 7 days or 1,000 miles for a full refund. Quite literally, you could buy a Tesla, drive several hundred miles for a weekend road trip with friends and then return it for free.
