We should do something together when I am up in the area. I want to explore Toronto more myself, and there are several neighborhoods that I want to see.

The title creates interest because a lot of people here have read Jane Jacobs' writing about neighbourhoods. For some reason "Toronto: XXXXX" threads often don't do very well.

I live about 200 feet from the above picture. The restaurant on the corner ("Cluck, Grunt, and Low" in this picture) is now a sports bar/wing joint called Puck 'N Wings.

The residential areas are great, but the commercial strip is an utter eye sore. Good energy on that strip, but too bad about the ramshackle buildings.

The abundance of well maintained brick homes in conjunction with the nearby retail/commercial strips makes this area fabulous! Subway service is great as well. I missed most of the Annex when I was in Toronto back in April. I really hope to head back to the city next summer for Pride weekend if possible. Fingers crossed. I have so many other great neighbourhoods to explore!

I have a friend in TO that tells me to go to "the Annex" while I'm there.

I always wondered why they called it that. I chalked it up to some kind of weird Canadian government entity that I didn't understand. But I guess it has more to do with a subdivision called the annex way back in the day?

I think you're confusing exhilarating/exciting/stimulating with beautiful. Most commercial strips in Toronto's core are very vibrant, but the buildings are mostly rather primitive buildings of very low quality and little architectural sophistication.

They're very interesting places that I spend a lot of time in, but they're also an eye sore. One shack next to another next to another, etc. They're a far cry from beautiful streets like the Champs Elysees or Park Avenue.

A lot of the commercial strips in Toronto are very plain and even a bit shabby, but they generally remain functional and vibrant. The residential architecture of the Annex shows off Toronto's vernacular very well.

The Annex is directly north of University of Toronto, so there are a lot of students and faculty in the neighbourhood.

Jane Jacobs lived in the Annex for many years.
