Has anybody seen the One America Plaza trolley stop recently? It looks like they're removing some of the metal siding between the tower and Santa Fe Depot. The station should feel a lot more open. Rendering from MTS' facebook below:

But hey, all-in-all a decent project, and better than what's there now. And at least it adds some more mixed use to the Ballpark District.

It does look similar to Diamond View but it almost looks exactly like that new Hyundai Capital building in Irvine/Costa Mesa right on the SW side of the 405. It could easily be that buildings twin, same height and has the same architectural feature at the top of the building.... Come on guys why not add on 10 to 20 floors of mixed use condos or hotels? They could redesign it so it tapers off and gets thinner at the top to support residential floor plates.... This is a huge disappointment after we had a 480 footer approved Cosmo was dope

They are not twin buildings...

It does look similar to Diamond View but it almost looks exactly like that new Hyundai Capital building in Irvine/Costa Mesa right on the SW side of the 405. It could easily be that buildings twin, same height and has the same architectural feature at the top of the building....

No it doesn't look the same and it's not even close to what the Hyundai building looks like. I looked it up, did you bother to see the difference?

Sempra will be getting 25 years of free advertising by being there during every game on TV. The move makes sense to me.


Probably good to have some regular business in the area to mix it up a bit.

I'm very interested to see what this joint project is going to look like. The previous East Village stadium rendering made it seem like there wasn't a lot of extra room...like the stadium was already pretty wedged in there...so I wonder how and/or from where are the going to acquire the land to build an additional 250K sq ft of convention space. Regardless, I hope it works out. I'm going to be depressed if the Chargers ever leave SD!

Dumb.

All that plan would do is stop the convention center expansion for years and allow the city to lose comic con which isn't going to wait around for the next decade to get something built.

I really want the Chargers to get a new stadium and it would be awesome to get it downtown if it works but please don't screw with the convention center expansion which is in its final phase of getting built.

If you want to get a new stadium first get back to getting the fans support by doing a better job on the field and next understand no city is going to pay the bulk costs of getting one built these days. They are going to have to put together a deal between the city, the Chargers and private funding which both the city and the Chargers are going to have to convince someone how a mixed use stadium project will make them money.

It can be done but you need to be creative and quit expecting the city (any city) to carry the load.

I was looking at the renderings from 2011 again, and it looks like the stadium was taking up not only the bus yards, but also a portion of the Petco tailgating area. In looking at it again, the stadium wasn't actually that compact. Rather it had a footprint similar in size (but not shape) to Petco. With that footprint, they should could probably put convention space below the field.

What the city needs to determine, is if it wants/needs a multi-use facility for concerts, basketball?, soccer?, conventions, and football. The Chargers are hoping the answer is YES, so they don't have to shell out as much, as the investment will be spread among other uses. Maybe the Chargers should be trying to attract a basketball team

Anyhow, the city could sell Qualcomm and the Sports Arena, and funnel these uses into the new facility. I imagine this would make the numbers much more palatable for everyone.

Think about how valuable the Sports Arena land along with all the other vacant flat city owned land off of Sea World drive be if it were up zoned for high density condos and apartments. You could easily fit five thousand housing units on that land if you were allowed to build up to say 12 to 16 floors. Then the 166 acres at Qualcomm... There is so much pent up demand for rental housing in SD (not sure if there are enough people willing to lease at the price point developers will want though...)

Once again why is it always the City being talked about when it comes to the Chargers/Aztecs/events Stadium (It should stop being referred to as "The Chargers Stadium") and the County is always left out of the discussion? At 3.3 million people with 16 other cities this is San Diego County's team.

The major impediment to building on the Qualcomm Stadium site is the soil pollution from the fuel farm, which would have to be cleaned up before any redevelopment could happen. Related to this is that the vacant land next to Sea World is the site of a landfill where toxic waste from the Aircraft factories was buried in the 40s and 50s. I believe some of this waste was cleaned up to stop the pollution into Mission Bay, but is it safe enough to build housing on? Both of these sites' value is reduced because of their existing pollution.

The Sports Arena site has so much potential, mainly because the entire area is a 1950s planning disaster. (Strip malls, auto dependency and parking lots as far as the eye can see!) But transportation infrastructure needs to be improved before you could add several thousand housing units to the area. This land is too valuable to waste on more auto-dependent housing/retail. Is the answer new trolley service to Downtown? A better connection to Old Town for the Trolley and Coaster?

Though lets not get too far talking about redeveloping the Sports Arena. The Coastal Height Limit applies, so unless this horrible law gets repealed, 30 feet is all that's possible.
