This doesn't look that great, but shows how far some other cities (Memphis in this case) are willing to go to preserve their historic streetwalls:

wow. awesome.
I'm sure they plan on building behind it.
And the street will be better for it, not having a piece of garbage like our fed building there instead.

If you've ever been to Spain, you'll find works like that common.

When I went to Valencia a few years ago there was a lot of building work going on. My friend explained to me that Spanish regulations maintain that as long as the original facade is restored and maintained, you could do anything you like with the rest of the building. So whole buildings in the city are actually brand new ultra modern buildings inside with the old facade stuck to the outside like a veneer.

It looks great when it's finished, as the facades look like new, even though some are hundreds of years old.

The examples in Winnipeg are very nice. I love how the new building seems to meet perfectly with the old facade. Unfortunately when I see stuff about the facade being restored on a building in Hamilton, I can't help but think that what they really mean is "we'll incorporate some arches and stuff into the new stucco and metal cladding design".

I haven't seen any proper facade restoration examples in the city yet.

Heritage value of Lister Block assessed

The Hamilton Spectator

(Jul 21, 2008)

The Lister Block's bits and pieces are under scrutiny as experts catalogue the landmark's heritage features.

A team of consultants, architects and city staff toured the building to identity which significant features can and should be saved.

Joe Mancinelli, vice-president of the Laborers' International Union of North America, which owns the building, said there's "general consensus on 99 per cent of the issues."

The catalogue of heritage assets and a preservation plan are among criteria the union must meet by the end of August to keep the city's purchase alive. The group went floor by floor to discuss every heritage element. The focus was on the first two storeys, considered most significant because of the old shopping arcade.

Glad to see that the gears are moving and things are being hammered out. Also glad to see that LIUNA seems to be participating well in the process. Hopefully we'll get to see some rough ideas from them in the next month or two.

Yes, this is a relief. Hopefully the arcade will be preserved, and hopefully there will be public access such as ground-floor retail so all the effort going into it can be appreciated by the people paying for it - us!

Dunno if anybody noticed, but I have dubbed this the Lister tunnel. LIUNA couldn't have made it harder to navigate. There was literally a blind person and a guide dog trying to get through the mess right before I took this photo. He was desperately telling the dog "come on boy, find the way! get us through!"

I hope he escaped the madness alright.

Why didn't they just close the sidewalk on that side of the road?

this is what happens when you allow your city to be taken over by pimps, rapists and thugs.

Indeed. It came down VERY fast. I got downtown around 5pm and was shocked to see it coming down. I had no idea it was happening.

Another gap in King William's teeth...

What the hell, LIUNA. What the hell. You owe us one hell of a Lister Block restoration.
