Ragin Cajun - For Sale

Noticed a big "For Sale" sign in the window this afternoon.

Haha. Doesn't surprise me. The two times I was there they had no food, second time (on a saturday night playing a show) no food and no beer except cans of Canadian. A restaurant with no food and a bar with no beer? Something wrong with that business model.

Too bad, it was a nice spot and the guy obviously knew what he was doing. It seemed to me he really just wasn't trying.

Where is that? I don't really recognize it.

James North, on the east side between Robert & Barton, http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&sourc...104.54,,0,2.66

Edit: I should note it wasn't Ragin Cajun at the time Google Streetview was taken in the Spring of 2009, as I believe Ragin Cajun only opened in the September 2009 timeframe.

That's too bad.

Though, I will admit I wasn't one of their prime supporters, as I was only ever there once in the last 1 3/4 years. That was at last winter's Beerfest.

I do recall a poor review regarding service from highwater on this forum.

Ah, that's too bad. I was only there once (pricey)-- but found both the food and service exceptional... unfortunately, we were the only ones in there that whole dinner service.

Yes. We got extremely bad service the one occasion we went there. Starting with not returning my call to make a reservation, being completely ignored when we arrived, and waiting over an hour for an entree that it turned out the waitress hadn't put in the request for. (There's more, but I won't bore you with any more details.)

Still, I'm very sorry to hear they are closing. It was a great concept, but perhaps too pricey to sustain, and certainly required alot more service savvy and attention to detail.

Clue train for prospective restaurant entrepreneurs: don't ignore your customers! The best food in the world won't compensate for not having your existence acknowledged.

I had a similar experience when having brunch there once. While the food was great, the service was somewhat lacking. Also, while the concept was unique and admirable, they were perhaps a little too rigid in their local foods policy. I remember wanting to order a Bloody Caesar with my brunch and was told they do not make them because there is no local source for clamato juice. IMO it would have been okay to have a few exceptions to the rule, especially where the drink list is concerned (after all, they must already have made an exceptions for teas and coffees seeing as, to the best of my knowledge, neither is locally grown). A bit more flexibility might have made the difference in sustainable operations.

Yeah, keep trying Hamilton, you'll get it eventually. Like, maybe next year?

About the Tapestry yea. I don't dispute your claims but know these guys were doing it for love for so long and still nailing it. You won't see local food done that well for a long time here.

There's 500,000+ of us. Can we do a bit better?

Yah I don't know about it being a mess but the place certainly seemed empty almost all of the time.

Yup, a complete disaster. The soggy bruschetta on a grocery store hamburger bun haunts me to this day........

Thai eatery getting friendly welcome in Dundas

TheSpec.com - Business - (Jan 8, 2010)

A new restaurant has opened in Dundas in the space on King Street West that once housed the DeLuxe Restaurant.

The Bangkok Spoon DeLuxe opened in late November and customers are already lining up to get in. The Thai eatery is housed in renovated space and owned by Teeradech (Neil) Pramauntan-yatath, who also owns two similar restaurants in Toronto.

"We've been very busy in our new restaurant," he says, adding that he's extremely pleased with the reception his business has received. "Also, the people are so nice here, compared to Toronto."

The Cheese Shoppe on Locke

TheSpec.com - Business - (Jan 8, 2010)

A new specialty food store opened on Locke Street in Hamilton just before Christmas. The Cheese Shoppe on Locke features artisanal Canadian cheeses as well as international cheeses and gourmet food products.

The husband-and-wife team of Catherine Corey and Torsten Krueger have been planning their new business venture for the past three years. The Grimsby couple thought about opening their shop in Grimsby, but later decided on Locke Street South at Melbourne, in space once occupied by an antique shop.

"We want to provide a personal, interactive experience, similar to food shops in Europe," Corey says.

The couple plans to add a bistro to the shop in the next couple of months.
