North Americas Tiers

How would you rank North American cities into tiers based completely on the urban experience?

I will rank my list into 6 different tiers (I don't know Canadian cities very well)

Tier 1 (the largest)

New York
And I guess Jacksonville fits the bill

Tier 2

Chicago
Toronto
Philly
San Fransisco
Boston ?
D.C.
Vancouver
New Orleans
Montreal

Tier 3

Seattle
Denver
San Diego?
Los Angeles
Minneapolis
Miami
Calgary

Tier 4

Portland
Austin
Nashville
San Antonio
Indianapolis
Pittsburgh
St Louis

Tier 5 (large but kind of dead)

Atlanta
Houston
Dallas
Charlotte
Cleveland
Cincinatti

Tier 6 (Small and or kind of suck)

Phoenix
Salt Lake
Kansas City
Albuquerque
And just kind of everything else

Not for me, LA has many amazing things to do in it and I love the city, but it lacks the cohesiveness many smaller cities have that tie the urban experience together besides a car or a long commute.

So to me on an urban experience alone, I just can't put it in the same category as Chicago, New Orleans, and San Francisco

Ottawa IMO is up there with Calgary or even better. Quebec City should be there somewhere too. Halifax and Victoria too maybe.

Toronto has such a tiny urban core, it is probably tier 3 at most. I would say Montreal is the only tier 2 Canadian city. Montreal is much older, not as suburban as Toronto.

Really dumb thread. No criteria for these tiers? Los Angeles in tier 3 but New Orleans in tier 1? I love New Orleans, but the whole metro area is like a quarter of just the city of LA.

Then you have Indy in a tier above Cincy and Cleveland? And Kansas City in the tier below those? How many of these cities have you actually been to and actually explored beyond downtown?

Btw, people of SSP, Cincinnati has 2 Ns and 1 T.

D.C., Boston, Toronto and Montreal are about equal, depending on what you like in a city.

Sf slightly lower (but higher than the above if we are ranking the whole urban area which includes many big centers)

Philly slightly lower

LA below that.

New Orleans next?

Seattle and Vancouver about equal

Then Denver, Minneapolis and Portland in that order

Atlanta first among the sunbelt metros

Miami next

Nashville above Austin? I might agree

or apparently Mexico at all. (Mexico City is bigger than NY and extremely urban.)

Vancouver does not belong in tier 2

Denver, San Diego and Minneapolis don't belong in tier 3

Honolulu should be tier 3 or 4.

Mexico City might be tier 1. Most Mexican cities would be at least tier 4...

Panama City is probably tier 3.

High transit ridership elevates Mississauga to tier 2. Halifax over providence due to more crowded buses.

Mississauga is a city? It has as high transit ridership as Philadelphia, Montreal, San Francisco? This is all new to me.

The initial list is generally good other than New Orleans. Nowhere close to being that high.

I would rate Mexico City in the same tier as NYC for sure, it manages to feel even more overwhelming than NYC, even without the skyscraper canyons. In NYC you might trip and land on a halal stand, pizza place, or hot dog stand, in Mexico City you trip and you'll land on a torta stand, a taco stand and a hot dog stand at the same time.
