uOttawa-- Alex Trebek Alumni Hall

It appears that the university has made a final decision to put the proposed alumni pavillion in an existing building---at 155 Seraphin-Marion Pvt.

This building dates back to about 1875 and has been restored and is in great condition.
The Dept of History has offices there, so I presume they will get some new digs somewhere on campus.

The Alumni Association is contributing and sharing the cost of the alumni Pavillon , with the university ,and had collected 100,000 dollars as of March to put toward their contribution.

Neat, the house next door was home to first graduate for some portion of his life. I am guessing some space in Desmarais may have been freed up by the new social sci building. And a quick Google run and yes it appears they are on the 9th floor.

It came out today that this will be named the Alex Trebek Alumni Hall after he agreed to pick up 2.3 million dollars of the renovation costs. plus fund the Alex Trebek Lecture Series at uOttawa from this year onward.

More than likely he will be named as Honorary Chairman of uOttawa's 400 million dollar fund raising drive which will be launched this coming week.

Alex Trebek was once a student at Ottawa U many years ago and he has been doing 'Jeopardy' for over 30 years, why not name it 'The Alex Trebek Alumni hall? He graduated with a Bachelor degree in Philosophy over 50 years ago? I believe that man is now 74 years old.

I love how this history department is nicely renovated. It looks so new with the red bricks. My mother did her degree in history: a Bachelor's, a Master's, and a PHD in the 1980's and 1990's. So she use to go to that History department a lot to talk to her professors about her research. That history department has certainly been renovated, since I graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2010 with my BA in Classics. I have not been a student at Ottawa U since then.

The porch has been restored to what it was when the the place was first built--but with a wheel-chair access ramp on the Cumberland side of the building--plus safety railings on the front steps for we old alumni to hang onto.

Smile Alex Trebek Alumni Hall

It would make sense that the Alumni Hall should be called Alex Trebek because he donated lots of money for many many years. Was it actually Alex Trebek who picked up 2.3 million dollars for reservations? He was a former student there over 50 years ago and he is a famous game show host.

To be fair.

Trebek donated 2.3 million dollars of the 3.5 million cost of restoring these heritage buildings.

The rest came from other donors , the major ones being Johnson Insurance, MBNA Canada, and Canada Life. All three have been long time sponsors of the uOttawa Alumni Association

Alex Trebek has donated a lot more money to his alma mater spread over many years. Usually without public recognition.
The Global and Community Development Office at uOttawa has been a big beneficiary of his generosity. This office matches university student , staff and alumni volunteers to charities at home and abroad that can use their skills. Think of student and staff of uOttawa Medicine and Nursing Schools going a broad to do volunteer work in clinics in underdeveloped countries ---as only one volunteer opportunity this office arranges.
Trebek has donated hundreds of thousands to this office.

Saturday evening uOttawa will officially launch its 400 million dollar fundraising campaign.
The Campaign Chair is Perry Dellelce, a prominent Toronto lawyer (corporate finance transactional law) and uOttawa grad. The Vice Chair is Daniel Lamarre , President and CEO of Cirque de Soleil, and a uOttawa alumnus.
Shortly after the launch we will probably hear of other large donations, like Mr. Trebek's , that were pre-booked before the official launch.

P.S.--last month Camille Villeneuve, an Outaouais entrepreneur, and uOttawa alumnus gave 1.5 million to the Telfer School of Management at uOttawa.

An acquaintance of mine , Ken Guarisco, receives an Alumni Association award for Commitment to the University. Ceremonies like this are pne of many uses the new Hall will be put to.

There is a little boutique at the main entrance where one can buy uOttawa Alumni Association swag.

Dear Leadingbloomer:

I congratulate your acquaintance for receiving the Alumni Association Award. Did your acquaintance do a Bachelor, Master's, or PHD at the University of Ottawa. I hope that he enjoys his Alumni Award. He should he proud of himself.

It is uOttawa Alumni Week once again----and this morning Alex Trebek donated another 5 million dollars to his alma mater. Not sure exactly what his donation is earmarked for, but it will be made clear soon.
