I was not aware of this fact, though it doesn't surprise me much.

Don't forget not just downsizing Baby Boomers, but younger people who want to live more centrally and live a more urban lifestyle than their parents. One day if I have money, I'd live in a condo if it meant living in a central location near entertainment, transit, jobs, other people. Already I note amongst my friends my age, most who grew up in Kitchissippi Ward like me, don't even have driver's licenses and have no intention of getting one because living here means we don't need them.

As October is approaching and the T&L will close after Sporting Life opens at Lansdowne, have anyone heard anything new about when is happening to this site?

I've never been to this store but I'm wondering if the site is big enough for a grocery store / does this area need one? (Independent and Whole Foods will be close). I'd love to see a department store go here though. I doubt they would want another location but it would be perfect for a MEC.

I think there's talk (don't know if it's confirmed) that a grocery store would go into the groundfloor of SoBa.

Is that confirmed, that T&L will close when Sporting Life opens? Or is it just a rumour? They just built that Bank St location a couple of years back after the fire.

That is what was reported when Sporting Life bought T&L in 2013.

(not sure if they have changed their mind since)

I asked a staff member recently and he thought he heard it will be torn down to build condos...I poked for more and got the impression it's just a rumor.

Would be great if it's true. That area is easily becoming my favourite part of Centretown. Once SoBa and SmartHouse go up and Hideaway is finished, that place will be really bopping. But we know it won't be Urban Capital building condos here if the rumour's true.

According to Spacelist, the space is up for lease:
http://spacelist.ca/p/on/ottawa/464_bank_st

So, I guess that means it'll remain as retail?

I think the best uses would be either a new Shopper's Drug Mart or a new Shawarma shop. Neither are present within 30 feet.

I heard a rumor it would be a Farm Boy...

Either way, this is getting to be a really nice and vibrant part of town. With Central, Central 2, Hideaway, Smart and SoBa and shops and restaurants all along Bank and Elgin, it's like a "south entertainment district" in response to the ByWard Market.

To be honest I don't even know what I'd like to see there.. There's already a bit of everything.

Farm Boy isn't too bad.

Personally, I think Ottawa needs more variety in the furniture market. We're still lacking in the Crate & Barrel, CB2, West Elm, Restoration Hardware type of stores. This area, with all of the condos, would be a good spot for one of those, I think.

If I'm not mistaken, Restoration Hardware is due to open at Lansdowne.

There was a mini conversation about this in the Retail thread... but thought worth mentioning here...

I spoke to a construction worker the other day, and it's a "Mexican" restaurant going in on the corner, with the middle 2/3rds of the space still up for lease..

I wonder if 'Mexican' means another burrito place.

Construction really seems to be coming along now. Really curious as to what will fill the other spaces.

I miss T&L...they had great sales every once in a while. Sporting Life is ridiculously high end and not a great replacement at all. It has it's place I'm sure, but as a sub-millionaire I preferred T&L.
