Still, to be talking about the possibility of 360-foot buildings outside of downtown would have been unheard of even a few years ago. Technically Austin has already had some decently tall buildings outside of downtown for decades thanks to the UT Campus and West Campus, but those two neighborhoods make up the same skyline that downtown does. Plus, in 2014 the first 200+ foot tall building came to the south shore just across the river from downtown, but again, that building is part of the downtown skyline, especially since downtown wraps around that area as the river turns.

The Broadmoor and Domain developments will be the first time we've truly had buildings of that height in a skyline defined separately from downtown. 360 feet will be way taller than anything currently outside of downtown. Excluding the UT Campus, West Campus, and the south shore area, the tallest building outside of downtown now is 159 feet. 360 feet tall would have been Austin's 3rd tallest building up until 2004 when the Hilton and Frost Bank Tower were finished that year. 360 feet today would be Austin's 21st tallest.

This is great news. North Austin has already been changing rapidly, and property values in the Mopac/Braker/Parmer area are rising significantly. I have a friend who lives near Metric and Parmer, and his 80s neighborhood is seeing dramatic increases (mostly land value). People who live in Austin should hold on to their properties as long as they can. I realize property taxes are a huge problem for many, though.

Oh, yeah, and then there's that "other 2nd downtown" - The Catalyst project on East Riverside Drive in Southeast Austin. If that one happened it would be another significant skyline outside of and separate from downtown and UT, but it does have a UT connection.

This one has a lot more opposition, though, since it would be replacing an existing neighborhood of large apartment complexes that are mostly inhabited by UT students.

Personally:

I actually wouldn't consider Catalyst a distinct skyline, given the number of VMU developments and development opportunities between it and downtown proper. It would simply be another midrise offshoot from the downtown highrise core a la West Campus.

Yeah, that area is definitely going to see future high rise development as an extension of the downtown core, still, at this point, those two areas are fairly separate. I've said it before, but I think eventually Riverside Drive will be lined with high rises with a little more bulk as they fill in the lots around it. The East 7th Street corridor is another one I'd expect to eventually upzone.

I'll post their names on your flickr account. In this first photo, that's not 500 West 2nd. That's Third + Shoal.

In the 2nd photo, 500 West 2nd is the dark blue tower on the right. Third + Shoal can be seen on the far left. The building in the middle is Austin Proper.

By the way, these are great looking photos. You should post these in the "My City Photos" forum.
