Here's the front of the Market itself. It's basically a new-ish "farmer's market" type of thing

New apartments planned with views of the smokestacks

Old warehouse-turned-condos

Money shot of the market with the skyline in back

Next few shots are inside the market

Outside the coffee shop

Inside the coffee shop

This next one is the best one IMO

See the white wall ...

... and the lady working on the mural on the white wall

Cool modern houses

Parking lot is dying for them to put something on it

Great photos and tour, James Bond! The River Market is the active version of the North End with its sleepy rival of Columbus Park across 169... This area will continue to grow and since it's the only neighborhood in KC to feature a streetcar loop right now, it's only more enticing to developers and people looking for a nice urban location to live.

man, the river market used to be so underappreciated and sleepy as all get out. it does not appear that way anymore.

the mix of modern and pre-war stuff looks good.

hopefully someday they can really connect the river market to the river and remove some of the highway infrastructure.

Yeah it was really jam packed when I was there (Saturday). Almost as jammed as The Plaza.

There are some walkways that go down to the river. The problem are the steep slopes plus the railroad. Would be very hard to put any sort of meaningful connection there.

they would need to cap the railroad like they did with the arch grounds. due to the slope, i think they could do some cool "hanging gardens" type thing, "zigguratting" down to the water. i thought i saw some proposals a few years ago.

LOL I didn't notice that. However you're going to have to fight off that big burly guy to get at her.

Another gem in the heart of the urban core!! This place has truly transformed since the late 80s...I'll give you an example.

See the glass building in the background? That was the former site of the Old Chelsea Porn Theater, which finally closed in 2000. I couldn't find any pics of the structure, but you get the gist.

The River Market area was also formerly called the River Quay, and was the area of quite a bit of mob activity, including car bombings and shootings.

If you get a chance, go to the Steamboat Arabia Museum. It was a steamboat that was excavated from a cornfield near the Missouri River. It sank back in the 1850s, and shortly afterwards, the river changed course. It was discovered back in the late 1980s, and instead of selling off the contents, it was decided to turn the findings into a museum instead!!

If anyone wants to see this area in video, the first 4:15 of my "Summer Time in Kansas City" video I just finished has a lot of really good scenes of the market and surrounding area. Make sure your speakers are on for accompanying music.
