All photos by me, taken last year. It was mostly rainy in Nassau, but there were enough breaks in the rain to get out and explore the city. Unfortunately, I lost my memory card that had all my Freeport/Grand Bahama photos on them. This year I am going to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and later to Georgetown, Grand Cayman and back to Cozumel, Mexico.
First, views from the cruise ship:
Time to head out and get some lunch. A local recommended The Bahamian Kitchen. Food was very good. It was a bit early for lunch and there wasn't a crowd. We had a chance to talk to the owner/manager, an ex-pat who's lived here for a decade or so. I got the fish of the day.
After a few more showers, I decided to walk up to Fort Fincastle. It was nice to get away from the area around the cruise ship terminal and all the touts and walk though some neighborhoods without other tourists. The fort isn't that impressive, but the views are nice and the Queen's Staircase is nearby.
If I remember correctly, the Queen's Staircase was originally carved out of stone by slaves. Now it is time to head back down towards the waterfront and some of the government buildings of Nassau (the pink buildings).
I saw quite a few Greek restaurants in Nassau and Freeport. Ate at a Bahamian/Greek fusion place over in Our Lucaya and had good chicken pitas and conch fritters. I didn't eat at the place below, though.
Next, we head over to Atlantis on Paradise Island. The cost of a taxi from the port to Atlantis is regulated. There wasn't any cost to go into the casino and see the aquarium. I guess due to the inclimate weather, nobody bothered to stop us when we wandered around the property and went out to walk on the beach between rain storms.
Atlantis is work seeing for the aquarium and the casino, but it is just too fake for me, as I'd never want to stay there.
