By the way, Hanover also did Ashton. I'd say the quality of this building is better than Ashton, but is it right for the location? I'm not sure.

I wouldn't want twin towers but the 2011 design is much more interesting and having one building designed like that would be better than this. The coloration, the crown, the way it is tied together with the streetscape made more of an impact. Is the 2011 the best? No but it is light years ahead of this design.

As far as thinking that comments on this board influenced White Lodging to change the design of the JW, you make me laugh. They changed the design because they saw an opportunity with the Austin market to go upscale. The Fairmont forced their hand, not SP Forum.

As for bait and switch, Trammell Crow wasn't chosen based on public comment of the design. It was a land sale, not a design competition. If it was, Stratus would have gotten the job. Trammell Crow got the deal because they made the best offer to the City. The designs were preliminary, and have evolved. Did y'all not notice that this design is for Hanover, not Trammell Crow? TC is acting as Master Developer and selling the block to Hanover, who hired their own architect.
Glad to make you laugh, but I think you are only partially correct. The local media focused on public criticism of the bland original White Lodging proposals. White was still looking for concessions or incentives from the city. Then along came the Fairmount proposal with its sexy design. There were possibly multiple factors at work.

Could you provide more information about the involvement of Hanover in the Green Water project? I can't find anything online that even mentions it, but I may not be doing a proper search.

Hanover is listed at the bottom of the recent rendering.

I don't get the obsession with blue glass and light colors.

Someone should email the architects* and ask about the materials. Are the windows really black? Are the colors subject to change?

* Assuming they have email. They may just be listed in the yellow pages.

OK, I saw the Hanover Company logo along with the Trammell Crow logo on the render you referenced. I can't find anything else online about Hanover's involvement in this project. I even looked at Hanover's own website. This project is not listed among their developing projects. Was there an announcement or press release regarding Hanover's involvement?

I was wondering about the Energy Control Center towers that were a part of this project. I read an old article from 2010 that stated the earliest they could purchase the land was March 2013 after the center relocated. I then saw that the relocation was finalized in April of this year.

Does anyone know if the land, 301 West Ave, has been sold by the City yet?

Based on my observations, the property is still being maintained by the city. The air conditioners are running and there is usually a single car (I assume security) in the lot 24/7.

I think the posted article kind of illustrates my point that the comments and criticism made on this site do not go un-noticed by the media and probably by the developers of these various projects.

Ha! That's great. The Downtown Austin Blog and Jude Galligan were also mentioned, and the Austin Contrarian was linked.
