I believe they are referring to a sculpture for the public park space outside of the building.

Yeah I don't consider it public art if it's in the lobby

^Difference might be whether the indoor space is a public "winter garden" that's required to be open to the public, or a typical office building lobby where the security guards see it as their sworn duty to prevent any rubbernecking or—horrors!—photography.

Henry Moore's Large Interior Form at Three First National Plaza comes immediately to mind. At least Louise Nevelson's Dawn Shadows at Madison Plaza is still visible from the public sidewalk.

Also I just don't consider a giant wall of LED displays to be art. It's not permenant, it's technology and will be out of date in less than a decade. So while the concept and the content is awesome, I just see it as a way to display art and not art itself. A statue or mobile (like the sick Calder in the Sears) is far more permenant. I don't dislike the LED concept, but it's bound to break down or be replaced over time.

Then again this building is sculptural enough on it's own that I don't mind all that much! Maybe they could commission something that plays off the structural theme in the same way as Calatrava's little plaza art did in the spire design? Maybe balance a huge cone of rock on it's point or something cool like that?

What happened with this one anyhow? Was the art there first and then they built the building around it or did the art go up with the building and the lobby was a later addition?

I hadn't realized the lobby was "sunken" like that, that the windows didn't meet the floor on the west.

The lobby is more or less level with the sidewalk on Randolph, maybe a foot or two higher, but the park to the west rises up and over the ground level parking deck. So it's not so much that the lobby is sunken, bu that the park is one floor above grade at the north end of the site.

It is encouraging to read the snippet that says that they are liaising with "Chicago Cultural institutions", which I infer as being museums...suggests that the aspiration is "gallery space" and not "weather channel".
To be clear, I'm not worried about it being tacky, I just think that LED screens do not, by themselves, constitute "public art" or art at all. The content displayed will be great I'm sure, but it's just that, displayed artistic content, inherently transient. A scuplture or painting or mobile on the otherhand is a concrete and permenent work of art that doesn't simply disappear when the power is turned off or a circuit on a computer board fails.

you won't be able to see either as Moore's LIF is gone as of a few months ago

based upon the 'lipstick on a pig' renovation they are doing to the building, I can't imagine the ugly POS that is going to replace it

Did some work for 150's developers and took advantage of a couple great skies on October 12/14 to get the shots.

Here are a couple aerial shots that sort of show the layers of green roof.
