It's a city of 20 million. You're getting caught on old, fixed boundaries when the city fit within them. That's why it has a metro area around it.

It wouldn't matter if it's in different states. Most of it is actually in the State of Mexico anyway.

No, it's a city of 8-9 million people.

We're comparing CITY murder rates. When people are commenting on murder rates in LA, NYC, Toronto, wherever, it's the CITY.

And Mexico doesn't even have U.S. style metro areas. If you want to do a murder count for metro, have at it, but you'll have to include portions of four different Mexican states.

We know what you're saying. The most accurate method of measuring a city is by looking at its metro since that suggests its sphere of influence, but for the purposes of what we're doing here - recording city murder rates - we use the city limits numbers.

Actually, I like using both. I keep track of the murders happening inside my city as well as all the counties that make up the metro area and list them separately.

The Distrito Federal and Ciudad de México were the same thing, just as the District of Columbia and city of Washington are the same. The name Distrito Federal was officially dropped just last year but nothing else changed. Ciudad de México continues to have its separate government and elected mayor and there is no metropolitan government.

San Francisco is now at 47, after a shooting in the sunnydale projects, in Visitacion Valley

Oakland is now at 46, after a shooting in East Oakland.

San Jose is still at 20.

The rest of the Bay Area probably has around 75 murders in total. There have been at least 57 in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties (excluding Oak/SJ), but i can't easily find stats for the North Bay (though Vallejo did have 9 murders as of early June).

So that's about 190 murders so far, for the Bay Area's 7.5 million or so people. If you include San Joaquin County, that would add another million people and bring the total to around 240 murders, I would guess (36 murders so far in Stockton, don't know about the rest of the county).
