Not a surprise really. Saint John is older and is more dense than Moncton.
Saint John's heydey was from 1785-1890 (roughly). Moncton on the other hand only took off with the railway in the 1870's, but the city's growth spurt really began in the 1920's. As such, the physical layout of the city of Moncton was heavily influenced by the automobile, and as such is much more suburban in character than Saint John.
I take some exception to the characterization of Saint John as being more "fun" than Moncton however.........
Also, Moncton is now definitely bigger than SJ. Our CMA should surpass 150,000 this year. SJ continues to have CMA population of about 128,000, virtually unchanged over the last 30 years.
