Amazing, Martin. Whenever I feel depressed all I have to do is look at your posts to remind me of how fortunate I am to live here.

Great set as always, Martin - really love the first and third ones. Especially the third.

Summer temperatures in Mid-April are just beautiful. Few cell phone shots from yesterday and today.

It's funny how Saint John looks so much bigger, older, denser and more fun than Moncton in photos.

Yes, many places in the Maritimes have horizontal traffic lights similar to those you see in Quebec.

As opposed to the vertical yellow rectangle lights that you typically see in Ontario.

Not a surprise really. Saint John is older and is more dense than Moncton.

Saint John's heydey was from 1785-1890 (roughly). Moncton on the other hand only took off with the railway in the 1870's, but the city's growth spurt really began in the 1920's. As such, the physical layout of the city of Moncton was heavily influenced by the automobile, and as such is much more suburban in character than Saint John.

I take some exception to the characterization of Saint John as being more "fun" than Moncton however.........

Also, Moncton is now definitely bigger than SJ. Our CMA should surpass 150,000 this year. SJ continues to have CMA population of about 128,000, virtually unchanged over the last 30 years.

They're an interesting mix. Saint John is gorgeous, hauntingly grand, almost depressing solely because of how unrealized its grandeur is today with (comparatively) deserted downtown streets, etc.

Moncton has the one really nice, dense street (not judging, we only have two), but it's active enough. It has a much weaker enthusiasm than, say, Calgary, but it is still a strikingly, surprisingly, shockingly positive city for Atlantic Canada. People will tell you they love it there without joke or sarcasm - which is not as common even in HFX/St. John's.

They're two VERY, VERY different cities. A lot of NB outside of Saint John feels like it belongs out west beside the prairies.

You don't even need to get out of Montreal's island to find horizontal traffic lights: Saint-Léonard, Saint-Laurent etc have those. They're being phased out gradually on Montreal's island, though.

I wonder what his question really was.

Living in Montreal you see both vertical (on inner city streets) and horizontal (on wider suburban boulevards).

Though the vertical ones in Montreal are quite different from the vertical ones in Ontario. (Except for Westmount where you see Ontario-style vertical traffic lights with the large yellow housing/casing.)

But most vertical Montreal traffic lights are like this with a very narrow housing/casing:

I suspect that most people in Quebec including Montrealers see horizontal traffic lights as a Quebec thing, and would expect the Maritimes to have Ontario-style signals, like this:

Ours are similar but those Ontario ones would blow over here - they're too firmly anchored to sway with the wind. Ours hang on chains, which allow them to flap around violently in the wind - looks scary, but it actually keeps them and the pole from collapsing.

e.g. on a calm day:

During the storm:

Downtown they're much the same, but firmly anchored (doesn't get as windy down there) and black:

I find the traffic lights in the most central part of Montreal easy to miss as they are on the sides only (nothing overhead in the middle of the street) and usually grey-green which blends in with the colour of many old buildings.
