LA is one of the nation's densest cities (#1 or #2, depending on the scope you use.) A lack of density was never LA's problem...the problem is a lack of urban design and a culture of catering to cars at the expense of pedestrians.
Luckily, for those of us that care about such things, there's neighborhoods like Downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Pasadena, and Long Beach that
do have fairly good urban design and are walkable as anything on the east coast
