Marijuana to be legalized in Manitoba

Marijuana to be legalized in Manitoba; following Colorado footsteps

Quote:
In the wake of a court decision that allows medical marijuana users to continue to grow their own pot, Manitoba will become the first Canadian jurisdiction to follow in the footsteps of Colorado and Washington, the Sun has learned.

Policy-makers have been closely watching events in Colorado and the income the state is harvesting due to the legalization of marijuana.

Manitoba, long known to be a test market for many distributors and products, will soon be used to test legalization of marijuana in Canada, sources said.

Note: Government officials wouldn’t confirm the story.
There’s no word on when the government will reveal this change, but sources say it could happen as early as Easter Sunday

Our Immigration problems have been solved!!!

Thoughts?

Since the article is in a right wing newspaper that probably believes marijuana is a gateway drug and we would have obviously heard more about this legalization prior to the Sun article coming out, it's safe to say this is an April Fool's joke.

Awesome to hear. I can't smoke it myself as it gives me anxiety attacks, but I used to a lot as a kid. It's good that it's being legalized, people shouldn't be imprisoned for such a victimless crime, it's tantamount to prohibition.

Great news. Does a large part of the gang violence in North Winnipeg stem from the marijuana trade? Would love to see Winnipeg's murder rate drop further.

Haha. Guess I shouldn't have said anything. Let it play out for a little bit here to see how the thread would have developed.

April Fool aside, I think it sucks that the US, land of the "War on Drugs", is actually leading in legalizing marijuana in North America. Every time we took time to study these laws and impacts of marijuana on the society, we came to the conclusions that it was stupid and the drug pretty harmless.

The senators that studied this issue in 2002 came to the conclusion that these laws should be changed to legalize marijuana and its trade, and went further by stating that Canada should take a leading role to lobby the United Nations to change existing conventions. This was not a study made by Mark Emery but a bunch of old farts from the Senate.

Our governments shelved these studies because they didn't have the balls to stand up to the US at the time. And now Harper is still putting out laws today to restrict access to marijuana for medical purposes, what a shame.

Just for the record, provinces don't have the authority to legalize marijuana - it's federal jurisdiction. Ontario and probably others have already struck down prohibition laws as being unconstitutional, but any amendments that would have followed were blocked by Harper & Company.

It's especially ironic considering that the Chretien/Martin governments were pursuing legalization, but the then Bush-controlled US threatened sanctions if they did, and so it was dropped. And now that Obama is power and would "allow" us to do as we please, we've got Harper.

The article would have been better if it were titled, "Manitoba to be legalized in Marijuana".
