'mystery' location

"1957 Kodachrome slide, Los Angeles California Soap Box Race"

EBAY

The hill in the distance (on the left) is somewhat distinctive..I thought perhaps someone might recognize the area.

I like the soap box car that looks like an EGG.

'mystery' location #2

"1940s Los Angeles Street Scene, Original 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 Inch Negative"

EBAY

The hats the two men are wearing are similar to American Legion hats. (definitely the hat on the man standing up)

note the guy in the middle is sitting on an oversized Four Feathers whiskey bottle. (maybe they're going to, or coming from, a convention) the standing man has a camera.

I've never heard of Leask's....so maybe the seller is incorrect and this isn't Los Angeles.

The Derby came to an end largely due to cheating. The race cars were supposed to be made by the kids. But it was found out that many were being built by adults with professional building skills.

In motorcycle gang colors, the bottom rocker is an inverted arc beneath the logo indicating the location of the chapter. I didn't know the custom went that far back. In Army enlisted rank patches, the inverted arc below the chevrons is called a rocker.

Re Los Angeles street lights, aside from one-off custom work, one supposes that other municipalities ordered the same or similar lighting from the major manufacturers. Could there be "Wilshire Specials" (or something similar) in other cities?

MReyerson focused our attention toward street light towers, http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=8580 Similar in concept, many cities tried tower lighting, also known as "Moonlight Towers." Notably, Austin Texas still has 165' tall moonlight towers. "In 1894, the City of Austin purchased 31 used towers from Detroit. They were manufactured in Indiana by Fort Wayne Electric Company and assembled onsite. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonli...Austin,_Texas) This leads one to wonder whether any of Los Angeles' street lighting somehow matriculated to other geographic locales, not unlike street cars?

And on the subject of "specials," there are "Windsor Square Specials," too.

I remember during one of our skateboarding recon outings coming across what we figured was an old soapbox racecourse in the area of what is now Ernest Debs park....somewhere around the region I circled. It has changed since I was a teen (no kidding). We would be looking SW in your photo er, the Southwest Museum just out of the right side of the frame.

ETA: Cursory research seems to lend plausibility to my theory. That's the track I remember in the center anyway. 1960 UCSB aerial (rotated to put North at the top)

here is the current Google Sat view

This picture was taken in Santa Cruz, California. McCabe's Furniture was at 1360 Pacific Avenue, Leask's Dept Store was across the street at 1405 Pacific. The Isabella Rebekah Lodge #17 of the Odd Fellows was at 1386 Pacific.

Vintage Ad Rediscovered in Atwater Village

Greetings Fellow Noirish Los Angeles Members!

Long time viewer, first time posting here.

Not sure if it's been mentioned before, so I've decided to post about this recent discovery in the Atwater Village
neighborhood.

Last Month, The Eastsider, a local online publication, reported that a building undergoing renovations led to
the uncovering of an old hand painted advertisement
(known as a ghost sign).
It depicts a Dr. Pepper ad that might date back to the late 1920s.
During those years, the building's tenant is believed to have been the Los Feliz Produce Mart.

The Los Feliz Produce Market:

The building is located at 3070 Los Feliz Blvd.
Ad can be found on its left-side exterior wall.

View of the ad from sidewalk:

I took these pictures below of a time switch post in 2014.
It's located right across the street from the building undergoing renovations,
on the side facing Edenhurst Ave. Looks like it's from the same bygone era as the Los Feliz Produce Market.

You're correct CityBoyDoug. Flyingwedge posted a series of photos of showing Wayfarers Chapel under construction in 1951. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...eles&page=1546

In the Air Force "back in the day" a Chief Master Sergeant was described as wearing a "top kicker and bottom rocker" patch.

Cheers,

Earl

I was struggling to see how this was the same building as the earlier market.

but...In the aerial below you can clearly its original shape. (backward L)

I thought it would be a fun challange to try and figure out the ad that appears below the Dr. Pepper sign.

This one

detail

Then I noticed that the same color of yellow also appears above the Dr. Pepper ad.

-so I guess it's part of the Dr. Pepper ad. (so much for my fun challange )

Here's a picture from the late 1990's of the disused Soap Box Derby track in Ernest E. Debs Park.

At first I wasn't sure where to look.

I think this is correct.
