I don't know, Le Gavroche was on the downhill for a while even before the sale. The previous owners weren't involved at the end and the place showed. Seems like the new owners were already running things then, so can't say I'm overly surprised. There is definitely a market for another Le Gavroche in Vancouver, hopefully someone else gives it another shot.
The Amore cheap pizza place on Robson in Galileo (next to the alley) has closed - not sure if it was the vacanting of the upper floors by the ESL school or the opening next door at the 819 (in the old Rasoee spot) of another cheap pizza place.
Looks like Zipang Sushi is moving up Main to a much bigger renovated space in the old Bo Kong restaurant. Looking at the glasssed-in section, I wonder if this building started life as a Bino's or some fast food eatery?
Yup. There actually isn't much in the way of quality sushi in East Van but Zipang is definitely up there (Van-Ya in Collingwood and Toshi are also pretty good).
An update on the upcoming reopening of the Roof at Hotel Vancouver. I'm hopeful it'll be more successful this time around, rooftop restaurants haven't seemed to do well in Vancouver in the last 20plus years. Maybe this one will turn the tables.

this excites me so much. I hope it turns permanent!
I enjoy having the odd drink at the 900 west bar as it is a good throwback to the old school and doesn't cater too much to the image obsessed need to be seen crowd that most upscale places tend to cater to in this city. Heard many stories about those old places and hope it becomes a permanent fixture!

See my remarks in the comments section of that blog-Hotel Vancouver Roof's time has come & gone.

Who knows why... most of the rooftop places these days are mediocre so it's no surprise they aren't popular. But did they become mediocre because they lost popularity or the other way around? The downward spiral began slightly before my time, but it the last 30yrs no one has really been able to make it work even after numerous attempts, so far at least.
I like the surrounded by towers scene, gives a very manhattan feel. We've got a ton of restaurants/bars with ocean mountain views, diversity is a good thing.
Here in Toronto there are a few popular rooftop restaurants, Canoe being the best of the bunch. They do well here but only when they offer good fare.
I'll be sure to grab a post work drink at the new bar up there next time in back in van.
