Golf Courses of Edmonton

Howdy - I was just looking at some aerial photos of Edmonton and noticed that there is a veritable crap-ton of golf courses along the river. Just curious as to why? Is this all floodplain? Even so, why not some other kind of park? Is it because of the nature of the economy and its oil and gas industry attracting business travelers? Thanks ahead of time for any insights.
