I missed the news that Kwantlan Polytechnic is going to have a campus in this building, and at 30,000 ft2 it's a pretty good sized one too. The Sun had an article in the spring about the new campus and quotes Mayor Watts as saying it will be home to 1,600 students. She also said that UBC has a presence in downtown Surrey, which is also news to me.

I know SFU wants to double their space in that area as well.

I haven't taken the Skytrain in a while, so has there been any appreciable progress on the construction? They only just put the crane up a short while ago, and I wonder if a 50+ storey tower can be built before mid-2016.

Late 2016 or early 2017 according to the sales people at the presentation centre.

Yes Surrey Memorial is a remote teaching hospital for UBC. I thought I read earlier in the year that it is a team up with UBC and SFU with SFU wanting to expand into medical especially in the area surrounding SMH. Surrey is pushing fairly hard to make the area surrounding SMH aka the Innovation Boulevard become another major medical center in Metro-Van.

I am glad 3-Civic is starting to take shape. I am cautiously-optimistic it will be a pillar to spark more development in the central core.

I believe the shorter white crane is for the hotel. The taller orange one is for the residential portion of the building.

Coming along. And yes shorter white crane = hotel, taller yellow crane = residential tower.

Looks like the hotel will be built first. They haven't even started the foundation for the main. Looks like it's going to be a tight squeeze in that pit.

Going quick now. Already caught up to the same stage as Park Avenue.

For such a tall building, it's a narrow worksite. Park Avenue's hole is huge in comparison. Heck, even University District has a larger hole in the ground than 3 Civic Plaza.

3 Civic Plaza is a single tower whereas Park Avenue is two towers sitting on a long, narrow podium. there are also tennis courts and some other stuff going in behind the Park Place towers so they won't be taking up the whole space that the hole currently is.

I actually think without the skytrain there, the site would be even smaller as they are utilizing the unused space under the guidway.

Those latest photos make me wonder this even more.

The trend for sometime now, in the world's most skyscraperized cities has been to build tall and thin. As such, buildings in downtown Vancouver, vis-a-vis New York or Hong Kong, have always looked positively squat in comparison. And consider this, a recently topped out Manhattan tower known as 111 West 57th Street, soars to a height of almost 1400 feet and yet occupies a footprint measuring under 60 x 80 feet!!

The pillars have square concrete bases underground and you can see the side of them from the inside of the pit. i'd say that the base has at least 6 times as much surface area on the bottom than a cross-section of the pillar, giving it more support from the east side as well as north/south.

Besides, they do (obviously) have a shear wall going around the whole pit which gives lateral support to the land and in turn to the pillars.
